Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides Primary Anesthesia Care (General, Regional, Monitored Anesthesia Care) to patients having surgery.
    •     1)Provides anesthesia care for surgical cases (24 hour coverage) including preoperative anesthesia evaluation.
    •     2)Responsible to thoroughly evaluate patients prior to surgery to determine appropriate anesthetic technique to be administered to patient.
    •     3)Responsible to discuss patients physical status, significant laboratory findings and anesthetic choice with surgeon. physician.
    •     4)Performs preoperative anesthesia evaluation on patients scheduled for surgery.
    •     5)Responds to all Code Blue and emergency intubation situations within the hospital and is the team member responsible for intubation
    •     6)Assists with resuscitation throughout the hospital as needed.
  • Evaluates the surgical patients preoperatively.
    •     1)Review of history and physical examination
    •     2)Medications and allergies.
    •     3)Previous surgical and anesthetic history.
    •     4)Laboratory, EKG, Chest X-Ray results as well as special studies performed
    •     5)Preoperative diagnosis, surgical procedure to be performed, type of anesthesia care requested by surgeon
    •     6)Review of systems and assignment of physical status
    •     7)Explanation of the anesthesia and related procedures to the patient, answer questions, reassure and alleviated apprehension
    •     8)Order preoperative medications/tests if needed
    •     9)Confer with attending surgeon/physician to determine appropriate choice of anesthetic to be administered.
  • Conducts an immediate pre-anesthesia evaluation of the patient in the OR to include vital signs, level of consciousness and response to any preoperative medications
    •     1)Throughout the course of the administration of anesthesia continually monitors the condition of the patient and records vital signs every 5 minutes or less.
    •     2)Notifies attending surgeon immediately of any problems or unexpected reactions.
    •     3)At the conclusion of the anesthetic, determines when the patient is stable and ready for transport to PACU.
    •     4)Gives a thorough verbal report on the patient and course of anesthesia to the recovery nurse and assess initial signs before passing responsibility of patient to the recovery nurse.
  • Maintains an accurate, detailed and legible record for each patient in compliance with the hospital policy and procedures and The Accrediting Organization standards.
    •     1)Drugs administered = amount, time, route and narcotic waste
    •     2)Airway management.
    •     3)Fluid/blood administration, EBL (estimated blood loss).
    •     4)Vital signs.
    •     5)Monitors utilized: EKG, BP, Temp, Oxygen saturation, end tidal CO2, Urine Output
    •     6)Any significant events occurring during the intraoperative period.
  • Assembles all necessary drugs, supplies and equipment for the administration of anesthesia.
    •     1)Performs pre-anesthetic check for the proper function of all equipment, in particular, the anesthesia machine, suction and laryngoscope
    •     2)Cleans anesthesia work areas keeps area neat and orderly.
    •     3)Orders and stocks supplies for anesthesia services.
    •     4)Reports any malfunctioning equipment so necessary repairs can be made.
    •     5)Maintains drugs and anesthesia equipment in the Surgery Department.
  • Provides Pain Management Services as requested by the medical staff.
    •     1)Evaluates all patients referred to Pain Management Services in the clinic.
    •     2)Provides a Plan of Care with approval of the referring physician
    •     3)Administers treatments per plan of care
    •     4)Provides follow-up calls to clients.
    •     5)Inserts PICC lines as ordered per physicians
  • Maintains own professional growth and development by:
    •     1)Membership and participation in professional organizations.
    •     2)Attending continuing education programs both internally and externally.
    •     3)Maintaining awareness of new trends, techniques and technology in the field of anesthesia.


Licensure:

  • Nurse, Advanced Practice (APN) AND Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:

  • Masters degree in Nursing 2-4 years experience in anesthesia


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Good communication skills Computer skills Knowledge of anesthesia delivery equipment Good time management and organizational skills
  • AANA certification in anesthesia ACLS


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Able to transport patients of up to 250 pounds via wheelchair or stretcher. Able to lift patients with the help of equipment and/or other coworker. Able to perform CPR according to American Heart Association standards. Able to stand, stoop, and move around patient care area to effectively accompolish anesthesia nursing.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
