Directly responsible for patient care in the Department of Surgical Services, either as a primary care nurse, or with the team members. Will be able to function in all areas of the department.

Summary of Duties:

  • Performs accurate pre-operative assessments on all surgical patients, and makes appropriate plans for the care of those patients. Advises appropriate professional staff (surgeon, anesthesia personnel) when significant conditions warrant additional investigation.
  • Prepares patients for surgical procedures following established standards of care. Makes ongoing assessments as appropriate.
  • Performs circulating duties for all specialty services. Performs these duties according to established standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Performs duties as a Post Anesthesia nurse according to established standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Performs as a scrub nurse when required. Is able to function in the central sterile department, processing instruments and equipment. Performs these duties according to established standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Assists the surgeon in the performance of procedures requiring assistance. Performs these duties according to established standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Assists the Surgical Supervisor with the correct use, maintenance, charging, and control of supplies and equipment.

The professional registered nurse is knowledgeable of current trends in healthcare including but not limited to advances in technology, pharmacology, treatment care modalities, quality and patient safety. The professional registered nurse serves as a patient and family advocate while facilitating a cooperative and collaborative environment among all health care providers. The professional registered nurse is responsible for the planning, delivery and management of patient/family centered care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice embedded in research, evidence based practice and/or best practices. The professional registered nurse at Tufts Medical Center provides clinical excellence, which fosters and supports an environment central to our patient and family centered model of care. Minimum Qualifications: 1. Registered Nurse (RN) license. 2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) 2.
