MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides all elements of pre-anesthesia, anesthesia and post-anesthesia services including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care consistent with anesthesia plan and in collaboration with the surgeon/anesthesiologist/surgical team.

Manages conditions based on clinical indication, evidence-based care, cost effectiveness, and assessment of risks/benefits and alternatives.

Participates in preoperative evaluation including but not limited to assessment, exam, obtaining informed consent, ordering/administering pre‐medications, requesting and/or review of preoperative studies.

Ensures readiness and availability of equipment, supplies and medications to perform the planned anesthetic.

Delivers anesthesia care including induction, maintenance, support of life functions, and emergence from anesthesia.

Selects, obtains, and administers the necessary anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, fluids, and temperature regulating devices to manage the anesthetic, assesses response, and intervene as needed.  

Performs post-anesthesia duties including remaining with the patient and facilitating safe transfer of care to other qualified individuals; administering post-operative epidural pain relief and other post-operative analgesia in collaboration with the surgeon; and making post-anesthetic visits regarding the presence or absence of anesthesia related complications.

Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing advanced airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.

Maintains accurate, complete, concise, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record. Substantiates and submits professional services consistent with compliant coding and billing practices.

Other responsibilities:

Participates in quality, safety and peer review initiatives/performance activities, organizational and/or departmental meetings and committees, peer review, and workgroups as necessary.

Participates in education and/or onboarding of new team members, students, and other health care professionals.

Seeks experiences to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and advance the profession within and outside of the organization.

Maintains standards of productivity, access, face-to-face time, and quality metrics to ensure optimal, safe and timely patient care delivery.

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

License/Registration/Certification Required:

Active RN, and APRN/APRN-FPA/APNP or other APRN license(s) in state(s) of practice, AND

Active national board certification as CRNA by nationally certifying board (NBCRNA).

Active DEA registration prior to hire

If Illinois practice: active Illinois Controlled Substance License prior to hire

Active ACLS, PALS, NRP as required by clinical site/practice and/or role prior to or within 6 months of hire

Confers with the surgeon/supervising anesthesiologist as to the method of positioning to provide optimum safety for the patient and access for the surgeon. Ensures that a "Time Out" occurs with active participation from the OR team. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) functions under this Nurse Anesthetist Job Description approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). In collaboration with the attending physicians in the Department of Anesthesiology, and through implementation of standardized procedures, the CRNA is responsible for selecting and administering anesthesia to pediatric and adult patients undergoing surgical procedures in the Operating Room (OR), or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. Specific functions pertaining to the Department of Anesthesiology are established by the CRNA and his/her supervising physician(s), and approved by the appropriate medical and nursing administrators, the IDPC, the Credentials & Privileges Committee, the Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) Medical Executive Committee and the SHC Board Credentials, Policies and Procedures Committee. Inserts invasive monitoring lines for an anesthetic and for interpretation of physiologic data. Performs all aspects of airway management. Recognizes abnormal patient response during anesthesia, selecting and implementing corrective action and requesting consultation whenever necessary. Provides airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and uses basic or advanced life support techniques. Keeps the surgeon/proceduralist and responsible anesthesiologist informed of patient’s condition as needed. Documents anesthetic in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements; records type of anesthetic used. Evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia and instituting pharmacological or supportive treatment to insure patient stability during transfer. Performs post-anesthesia follow-up and evaluation of patient’s response to anesthesia in the recovery room, taking appropriate corrective actions and requesting consultation when indicated. Communicates with the assigned anesthesia faculty member, as needed, before, during and after surgery. Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency and according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
