Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner in PREPARE clinic serves as an integral member of the Department of Anesthesiology and Preoperative Services, providing comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluations for patients scheduled for surgical or procedural interventions. This role involves independently conducting thorough medical histories, physical examinations, and risk assessments to ensure patients are medically optimized for anesthesia and surgery. The NP collaborates closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare providers to identify potential perioperative risks, initiate appropriate diagnostic workups, and coordinate necessary preoperative consultants. The position emphasizes clinical excellence, patient safety, and efficient surgical throughput by ensuring timely and thorough preparation of patients in accordance with institutional protocols and evidence-based guidelines.

UCSF Medical Center requires all APPs to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Office in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). This process may take up to 90 days and must be completed prior to the start date in any APP position.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $100.48 - $130.31 (Hourly Rate).

This clinic is focused on improving modifiable risk factors for patients undergoing total joint procedures. As part of this innovative approach, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to help optimize patients’ health conditions to improve surgical outcomes following total hip and knee replacement surgeries. A Brief Overview The Physician Assistant (PA) functions under this Physician Assistant Job Description approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). Specific functions pertaining to the Service, Clinic or Department are established by the PA and his/her supervising physician(s), and approved by the appropriate medical and nursing administrators, the IDPC, the Credentials & Privileges Committee, the Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) Medical Executive Committee and the SHC Board Credentials, Policies and Procedures Committee. All PA’s who are credentialed and privileged by April, 2021 who have not completed a controlled substance course must successfully complete the course by August 31, 2021 during which time patient specific approval of a medication order by a supervising physician is obtained, documented in the medical record, and is co-signed. Orders and collects specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products. 5. Orders physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. 6. Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. 7. Obtains informed consent, as indicated. 8. Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork. 9. As directed by the supervising physician, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders the necessary tests and medications. Performs surgical procedures in the personal presence of the supervising physician. 11. Recognizes and considers age-specific needs of patients. 12. Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds. 13. Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary. 14. Facilitates the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. 15. Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources. 16. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. 17. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. 18. Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling.
