The Department of Orthopedics is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Supervisor for our inpatient teams. The APP Supervisor serves as the supervisor, mentor, and primary resource for Advanced Practice Providers in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. This individual is responsible for supervisory and administrative practices, human resources functions, clinical evaluation, role optimization, advocacy and education related to Advanced Practice Provider practice and professional development.
The supervisor will also have clinical responsibilities in the inpatient unit.

Responsibilities Include
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Advanced Practice, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Leadership, Physicians, and Advanced Practice Providers to assist in advocacy and implementation of advanced practice models of care and APP-specific guidelines for practice, as necessary.
- Works with leadership, physicians, clinic/unit managers and staff to educate, promote, utilize and optimize the APP, at the highest level of practice, in a team model of care.
- Participates collaboratively as part of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation leadership team in addressing significant issues and barriers that affect clinical practice and safety, quality and professionalism for APPs.
- Is responsible for coordination, implementation and assurance of orientation, competency assessment and mentoring for new NP/PA employees. This will occur in partnership with collaborating/supervising physician within the Department.
- Assures and monitors adherence of Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation APPs to regulatory processes and practice evaluation including: credentialing and privileging, internal standards, clinical protocols, compliance training and external professional standards.
- Collaborates with Director of Advanced Practice to identify, assure and monitor performance metrics for APPs including: productivity, patient satisfaction, quality and APP-specific outcomes.
- Assures and monitors adherence to APP minimum clinic/unit standards.
- Is responsible for needs assessment and monitoring of Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation APP employee engagement in their professional practice and involvement within the department. This includes: regular attendance at Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation meetings, leading quarterly NP/PA meeting, yearly-site specific meetings with APPs and activities related to improving engagement, professional work-life balance and work-satisfaction.
- Promotes the growth of APP staff in areas of leadership, clinical excellence, patient centered care, education, research and organizational involvement to meet the identified goals and needs of the employee and organization.
- Manages human resource issues in a responsible, respectful, confidential and fiscally responsible manner including: recruitment, on-boarding, orientation, direction, supervision, performance evaluation, annual merit and disciplinary action.
- Assures accuracy and approval of time and attendance records for Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation NPs/PAs.
- Participate in clinically relevant activities and attend UI Health Care APP council meetings and other conferences to enhance clinical and professional expertise.
Educational Requirements
Physician Assistant:
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and certification by the NCCPA.
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Nursing, which includes graduation from an accredited nursing educational program and certification by an accepted accrediting agency.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse.
- Board certified and licensed as an ARNP in state of Iowa.
- 3-5 years of experience as an APP
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
- Meets performance expectations as evidenced by APP Professional Performance Evaluation
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Experience with patient and staff education
- Extensive knowledge of applicable state and national regulatory guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new programs
- Management, supervisory, mentoring or other evidence of professional development experience
- Experience with evidence based practice or research utilization
- Participation in professional PA/ARNP organizations
