Position Summary
The Medication Technician (Med Tech) is responsible for safely assisting residents with the self-administration of medications in accordance with state regulations and facility policies. The Med Tech provides support to residents by ensuring medications are dispensed accurately and timely, monitoring for adverse reactions, and documenting care appropriately. The Med Tech also assists with resident care needs and supports the overall well-being and safety of residents in the Assisted Living Facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist residents with self-administration of prescribed medications, following the “five rights” (right resident, right medication, right dose, right time, right route).
Accurately document medication administration, refusals, and any noted changes in resident condition in the Medication Administration Record (MAR) and facility records.
Report any adverse reactions, medication errors, or changes in resident health status promptly to the supervising nurse or Administrator.
Maintain accurate inventory of medications and ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal according to state and facility policies.
Assist with scheduling and tracking physician orders, medication refills, and pharmacy communications.
Provide daily support and assistance to residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) as assigned (e.g., hygiene, mobility, meals).
Monitor residents for safety, health concerns, and behavioral changes, and communicate findings to appropriate staff.
Uphold infection control, safety, and emergency policies at all times.
Maintain confidentiality of resident information in compliance with HIPAA and facility policies.
Support a positive, respectful, and caring environment for residents, families, and staff.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of state-approved Medication Technician/Medication Aide training program.
Previous experience in an assisted living facility, nursing home, or healthcare setting preferred.
Licenses/Certifications:
Current Med Tech/Medication Aide certification as required by state regulations.
CNA certification
CPR and First Aid certification preferred (or ability to obtain).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of medication administration principles, including dosage, side effects, and safety precautions.
Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to working with older adults.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a care team.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive movements.
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Work Environment
Assisted Living Facility setting with direct resident interaction.
Exposure to infectious diseases, odors, and behavioral challenges may occur.
Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
