Certified Nursing Assistant, Surgical Peds Unit

Overview


Cares for patients in the hospital setting under direction of nursing staff, by performing the following duties, supporting the nursing philosophy. May include weekends, holidays, day, evening, night, and or on-call hours. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provides patient care as assigned and per routine as defined by educational scope, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.


  • Answers call lights in a timely and appropriate manner.


  • Documents care provided according to standards.


  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment.


  • Maintains supplies, including scanning, stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.


  • Floats to various units based on identified patient care needs.


  • Participates in department or unit performance improvement activities.


  • Training/precepting new partners in collaboration with unit educator 


  • Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM) with lab personnel 


  • Bladder scanning procedure reviewed 


  • Bladder scanner training complete (check off sheet for competency) 


  • Attaching patient to remote telemetry or bedside cardiac monitor 


  • Managing and reporting collection devices: 


  • Colostomy, ileostomy or other fecal management systems: care and output measures 


  • Indwelling catheters: care and output measures 


  • Nasogastric tubes to suction 


  • Surgical drains under direction of supervising RN 


  • Competent in completing vital signs: Manual process for blood pressure and required reporting of abnormal values to supervising RN 


  • Discontinue invasive devices under the direction of the supervising RN: 


  • Indwelling (Foley) catheters 
  • Nasogastric tubes 


  • Peripherally inserted intravenous catheters 


  • Similar devices as appropriate 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a CNA program.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

Current CNA certificate in applicable state.  

Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.

Answer call lights promptly. Help check in all new residents and re-admissions, as well as assist in the transfer of residents to different rooms. Put resident's clothing away properly. Report any changes in resident's condition--e.g. eating habits, behavior, temperature, etc. to the charge nurse of the unit. Turn bedridden residents every two (2) hours or sooner as indicated. Wash, clean, and dry all incontinent residents. Assist the treatment nurse as assigned. Complete assignment report to charge nurse at the end of every shift. Be responsible for well-being and nursing care of all residents assigned to his/her unit while on duty. Take vital signs and monthly weights (with assistance) and record results in EMR.
