Job Description Summary

The ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a valued member of the intensive care team who has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients. Through relationships in an interprofessional culture that supports all members of the healthcare team, the APP will demonstrate specialized skills in the care of patients and families undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The APP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams, practicing in a collaborative environment necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient. Reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care. The provider will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership to the organization and profession. They will perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures; peri-procedural services, and coordinate discharge planning to next level of care (as applicable).

Hours per week: PRN – shifts based on ICU need.

  • All Adult ICU shifts are 13 hours.

  • APPs working concurrently in another critical care position are required to work 2 shifts a quarter at minimum.

  • APPs working concurrently in another non-critical care position are required to work 4 shifts a quarter at minimum.

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift:

  • Coverage as needed in any MUSC Adult ICU.

  • APP must complete 1-2 orientation shifts in specific ICU prior to starting coverage.

  • Shift coverage is varied and may include days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Degree of Supervision
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:

Basic Life Support (BLS).

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Job Duties:

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations

  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline

    • Pulmonary artery catheter placement

  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Additional Job Description

Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate. New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required

Review medications for clinical need, simplification and possible drug-drug interactions and adjust as indicated. Prescribe, administer and review/evaluate patient’s response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment excluding narcotics and controlled medications. Evaluate outpatients and manage acute and chronic illnesses according to the usual scoped of care to include attention to maintenance of stable conditions, preventive health care and screening. Formulate diagnostic plans and therapeutic regimen, including possible hospitalizations. Make referrals to and collaborate with home health services to provide and maintain continuity of care. Plan, provide and evaluate care that promotes wellness and prevents disease/injury and disability. Assist patient to maintain or improve their current state of health when disability already exists. Job Description What will you be doing: The Neonatology Nurse Practitioner (NP) Per Diem is responsible and accountable for the application of the nursing process, supervision of clinical practice, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership, and patient care management across the health care continuum from preventative, acute care through discharge.
