What you'll do

The Nurse Manager II has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for delivery of patient care within the defined patient care areas. The nurse manager identifies goals and opportunities for his/her defined areas consistent with organizational goals, strategies and initiatives. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to collaboration with organizational leadership in support of the annual operating plan, hiring and retention of personnel, performance improvement activities, and participation on management team and other committees as assigned.

The manager has a variety of department wide high-level responsibilities, including budget preparation, financial analysis, performance improvement, staff supervision and serving as the primary back up in the absence in their Assistant Nurse Manager. The Manager will have direct responsibility and oversight of the employees in their cost centers/divisions.

  • Responsible for the following;
    • One or more units

  • Decision Maker
    • Develops and accomplishes objectives, strategies and tactics for the Acute Care Unit with special emphasis on Annual Operating Plan Objectives. Where appropriate, institutes corrective actions, including reallocating resources, reprioritizes, and/or recommends modifications to established plans.
    • Develops and maintains a departmental structure, operating procedures and core staffing to meet demands for services in collaboration with Acute Care Nursing Director.
    • Establishes and/or staffs appropriate intra and interdepartmental committees related to accomplishments of the Annual Operating Plan and Acute Care Nursing Goals.
    • Establishes and monitors operating performance standards for the department which ensure the effective day-to-day operation of the department.
  • Skilled Communicator
    • Mentors staff to develop patient care teams that demonstrate professionalism, competency and quality.
    • Establishes timely and effective communication with department staff to keep them aware of important corporate, divisional or departmental information and to receive information and insights from employees.
    • Communicates and collaborates effectively with organizational leaders, external customers and agencies.
    • Utilizes Relationship Based Care principles in all interactions.
    • Articulates clear expectations with staff and members of patient care team.
  • Accountability
    • Accepts responsibility for all aspects of leadership without blame, complaining or procrastination.
    • Identifies and corrects systems, care and service delivery problems which interfere with patient, staff and customer satisfaction issues and/or recommends action to appropriate party.
    • Ensures that all areas of the organization receive adequate advice, assistance, and service relating to patient care.
    • Evaluates, develops and maintains departmental performance improvement standards and measures in collaboration with unit leadership.
    • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency requirements (e.g. Joint Commission) in collaboration with Acute Care Nursing Director.
    • Proactively identifies potential and actual risks to safety, identifies the underlying causes and makes necessary improvements so risk is reduced.
    • Ensures staff compliance with annual mandatory education, unit specific competency and annual health assessment.
  • Human Resource Management
    • Assumes primary responsibility for hiring staff and planning/implementing corrective action plans.
    • Ensures that all employees in the department know what is to be accomplished in their jobs; whether their performance is satisfactory and what they can do to improve performance
    • Supervises department management staff and others within the department, develops mutually agreed upon standards of performance, appraises performance, and provides direction ensuring effective performance of department responsibilities in collaboration with the Acute Care Nursing Director.
    • Ensures that employees in the department possess or are developing the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their work.
    • Acts as the Chief Retention Officer of their area.
    • Ensures 100% on time performance reviews.
  • Financial Resource Management
    • Monitors accomplishment of agreed upon objectives at the departmental level; and where appropriate, institutes corrective actions, including reallocating resources, reprioritizing, and/or recommending modifications to established plans.
    • Develops service improvements, management systems, expense control programs etc. to ensure achievement of financial objectives in collaboration with the Acute Care Nursing Director.
    • Prepares annual budgets, monitors monthly expenditures and prepares variance reports.
  • Visionary Leader
    • Participates in nursing leadership meetings to create a successful nursing department.
    • Actively participates in Professional Practice work of the nursing department and ensures staff participates as well.
    • Develops goals for the Nursing department and unit that are aligned with the Annual Operating plan in collaboration with the Acute Care Nursing Director.
    • Directs implementation of and ensures regular meetings of unit councils.
  • Development of Bassett Network/System Thinking - A leader who thinks globally and adopts philosophy of continuous improvement for Bassett processes/systems and the Bassett Network.
    • Develops working relationships with partners in The Bassett System to effect positive results with emphasis on building relationships with ambulatory nursing leaders in BPG and regional sites.
    • Regularly assesses opportunities to enhance system(s) performance
    • Develops action plans and completes them to improve patient and employee satisfaction
    • Connects with counter parts at affiliate sites to actualize potential for adoption of best practices and standardization
    • As appropriate, takes action to create a better experience for patients traversing the continuum of care.
    • Measures deployment of resources and develops plans to optimize ROI.

What we need from you

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field degree program within one year in position, required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field, preferred

*** All RN’s hired and do not currently hold a BSN will be expected to demonstrate enrollment in a bachelor’s prepared nursing program within 4 years of hire. BSN must be completed within 10 years.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience, required.
