Job Description
The Charge Nurse is responsible for the coordination of all unit day-to-day operations and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities and Duties
Facilitates proper placement of patients on nursing unit, makes room assignments, and keeps up with the assignment board.
Adjusts all staff appropriately (flexing up and down) utilizing the staffing guidelines per unit.
Ensures staff remain compliant with documentation standards.
Serves as a clinical resource for unit staff and encourages evidence-based practice.
Provides direct patient care for a team of patients when indicated by unplanned changes in acuity, peak census, or staffing or assigned.
Serves as a liaison between physicians and hospital departments to facilitate smooth operations of the unit.
Works with staff to deliver exceptional patent experience and facilitate patient satisfaction scores within acceptable range.
Holds staff accountable for performance and identifies practice areas needing improvement and takes appropriate action for improvement.
Completes performance appraisals and feedback using peer review process.
Assists Clinical Manager/Director in holding unit staff accountable for ensuring patient safety through compliance with patient safety initiatives and regulatory requirements.
Assists Clinical Manager/Director to facilitate staff participation in performance improvement, risk management activities, hospital, and unit based projects and shared governance committees.
Assists Clinical Manager/Director by following up and making initial comments on risk reports/events occurring during assigned shifts.
Completes continuing education in management/mentoring.
Maintains current knowledge and competency in nursing practice.
Maintains a supportive and dynamic clinical partnership with manager/director by supporting facilitating change on the unit level.
Delegates duties or tasks as needed to assure compliance with standards or to fulfill unit needs.
Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice.
Education
Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse program is required.
Bachelors Nursing is required within (2) years of hire.
Experience
Minimum of two years of nursing experience within the assigned scope of services is required.
Certification/Licensure
Registered Nurse licensure required. Based on primary state of residency and in accordance with current West Virginia and/or Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or West Virginia (as applicable depending on geographical area) with either a: Multi-state license, under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Clinical specialty certification within the scope of services/responsibility is required within (1) year of hire with BSN, or within (1) year of obtaining BSN.
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
