Pediatric nurses care for well, sick, and injured children from babyhood through adolescence. These registered nurses also play a critical role in their young patients’ formative years by helping families maintain a healthy home environment. If you’re looking for pediatric nurse jobs, you’re in the right place.

The job outlook for registered nurses is promising — employment over the next decade is expected to grow by 6%. We can help you find great pediatric jobs for nurses on IntelyCare today.

Pediatric Nurse Education and Skills

Compassion and solid communication are of utmost importance when treating pediatric patients and their families. You’ll develop these skills as you learn to become a pediatric nurse. First, though, you’ll need to obtain an RN license.

Employers may require pediatric nurse job candidates to have a year or two of clinical experience under their belts. You may also need certain certifications such as basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS), or IV certification.

You may apply to take the certified pediatric nurse exam once you have completed

  • 1,800 pediatric clinical hours in the past two years or
  • 3,000 pediatric clinical hours in the past five years

Again, it’s not necessary to obtain CPN certification in order to work in pediatric nursing jobs, employers may prefer to hire someone with this distinction.

Pediatric Nurse Resume and Cover Letter

A solid resume and cover letter can help you gain an advantage when you apply to pediatric nursing jobs. Make sure the keywords in your resume and cover letter align with those you read in the job ad. For example, if you see “step-down experience” listed toward the top of an employer’s requirements, put that very phrase in your pediatric nurse resume.

In your pediatric nurse cover letter, you can expand on your experience caring for patients transitioning out of ICU. What else should you include in a cover letter for pediatric nurse jobs? Check out our cover letter templates for inspiration.

Interviewing for Pediatric Nurse Positions

You spend considerable time and energy on your resume and cover letter, so be sure to follow all the way through and prepare for your job interview. Take a look at typical pediatric nurse interview questions and practice your answers in front of a mirror.

If you really want to stand out from the competition, do some homework on your potential employer. What are their values and culture? Do they have a mission statement? What’s been mentioned in recent press releases? Take what you learn and incorporate it into your answers, as well as your questions for the hiring manager. This can help leave a good impression by demonstrating your genuine interest in their particular facility.

Ways of Working

One of the great benefits of working in nursing is that the field has options for how and where you’d like to work. You can find full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, or per diem pediatric nurse job openings. Additionally, you can choose to work in a physician’s office, hospital, community clinic, or other setting.

Salary for a Pediatric Nurse Job

The median salary for pediatric nurse jobs is around $78,200 per year, although this can vary depending on your education level, experience, advanced credentials, location, and the facility itself. To get a better idea of your potential pediatric nurse salary, explore the jobs on this page to see what employers are currently offering in your area.
