Duties and Responsibilities: Performs surgical scrub duties in all specialties: Patient positioning, draping; sterile instrument and supplies set-up; effectively working with surgeon; assisting RN with sponge, needle and instrument counts, and assists with cast/dressing applications. Assures instruments and equipment are ordered as per physician request. Maintain disposable supplies and order supplies as needed. Demonstrates working knowledge of care and handling specimens, surgical instruments, supplies and equipment including flash sterilization. Assists CN in assuring completion and staff compliance with sterilization logs. Assists in preparation of surgical procedures by anticipating needs of physician and patient. Prepares operating area safely and in an organized manner. Utilizes the surgeons preference cards and selects the appropriate supplies and equipment in a cost effective manner. Cares for equipment to prolong useful life. Prioritizes and uses time efficiently. Delegates tasks effectively to insure maximum productivity and functioning of the department. Creates and maintains sterile field. Provides a safe, therapeutic environment for patient and families. Uses patient restraints appropriately. Works efficiently with physicians and RN's in the variety of surgical procedures done in the OR, with specialized equipment, trays and instruments. Answers telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, addressing callers and patients appropriately by name and/or title. Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations, following established protocols, remaining calm and informing appropriate persons. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to: identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings, assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise and understandable manner applicable for the populations checked below: Infant ( ) Pediatric ( ) Adult ( ) Geriatric ( ) Demonstrates good use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions. Under the direction of a RN, the Surgical Technician works cooperatively with all surgical team members functioning as scrub assistant to the surgeon and assistant surgeon during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician II is knowledgeable about, skilled in, and coordinates at least one area of expertise in the Operating Room. The Surgical Technician is responsible for adhering to all standards of care and for promoting teamwork among coworkers. Core Competencies Assists the circulating nurse in preparing the assigned operating room for surgery. Checks the surgeons preference cards before beginning all surgeries Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to approved techniques. Practices aseptic technique in opening surgical packs, sutures, and trays. Maintains a sterile field throughout each surgical procedure. Performs sponge and needle counts according to policies/ procedures. Reports to circulating nurse any drains or packing remaining in patients after surgery. Applies dressing to wounds and cleanses skin immediately following surgery. Assists in the transfer of patients from the surgical table to gurney. Operates surgical tables, lights, electro-surgical units, and instrumentation systems used during surgical procedures. Assists the circulating nurse in cleaning and preparing the operating room for surgeries to follow. Maintains a safe working environment: ensures gurneys are in locked position except when transporting, ensures side rails are in up position as indicated, keeps unit free of hazards/clutter, adheres to infection prevention guidelines, disposes of infectious waste properly Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion when discussing patient information. Assists in maintaining a well functioning unit by: removing broken equipment per policy alerting appropriate resources of faulty/broken equipment Orients new personnel to department, equipment, and routines. Assists other team members by offering assistance to distribute the workload. Accepts legal responsibilities inherent in actions by exercising judgment and practicing within guidelines allowed. Participates in clinic activities: Attends unit and Medical Center staff meetings/inservices, is responsible for reading and comprehending all posted minutes and memos. Scrubs 2 of 10 major specialties: robotics, complex spine, ophthalmology including retinal surgery, total joints, bariatric/advanced laparoscopic, GYN, endovascular, cardio-thoracic, neuro, burns/reconstructive plastic/complex ENT independently. Maintains current level by providing 1 inservice annually, or is a super user for new product/device or other activity submitted for approval by manager.
