Job Summary and Qualifications What you will do in this role: Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field. Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure. Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications. Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to prepare and assist in surgical procedures. Maintains a safe sterile field by a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety. Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient. Understands the principles of and can competently assist a surgeon during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself. Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications. Demonstrates the ability to close a surgical site (under physician supervision) with appropriate suture. Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase. What qualifications you will need: Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required. Certification in Surgical Technology or verifiable Surgical Tech experience prior to 9/1/2009 is required. Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required. 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred. Minimum Requirements: - Must currently be enrolled and remain enrolled in accredited Surgical Technology Program - First semester of program completion is required - Current BLS card (American Heart Association) General Purpose of Job: A surgical technology student assists the surgeon and other professional and technical personnel in carrying out Operating Room and Surgical functions under the direct supervision of the certified surgical technologist and or circulating RN. Assisted care is administered under the direct supervision of the certified surgical technologist and or professional operating room nurse. The patient care population includes infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Essential Duties and Responsibilities : All essential duties and responsibilities must be performed under the direct supervision and guidance of the certified surgical technologist and or circulating RN. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Sets up CVOR appropriately for procedure Takes into account size of patient in selection of supplies, equipment Breaks down room after procedure utilizing standard precautions Assists surgical team before, during and after surgical intervention, including cleanup and getting patients when needed. Assists in maintenance, care and cleanliness of department, supplies, equipment, and instruments. Handles instruments, equipment in a manner that minimizes breakage, damage Reports damage, breakage and removes item from usage. Transports instruments back to decontamination in closed carts following cases. Is knowledgeable of process improvement activities in unit and assists as requested Participates in staff meeting on a routine basis Utilizes self directed learning activities to maintain competency and above. Education and/or Experience: Current enrollment in accredited Surgical Technology Program First semester of program completion is required.
