Job Summary Under the Supervisor of the Director, the Surgical Technician assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients. Functions as a member of the sterile team in creating and maintaining a sterile field and issuing instruments to surgeons .The surgical technician scrubs for surgical procedures for geriatric, adult and adolescent, and pediatric patients. Cleans instruments and rooms, picks cases, monitors inventory and stocks OR rooms. May provide assistance to GI Lab and Endoscopy Lab in the performance of Endoscopy and GI Procedures. The Surgical Technician also provides care based on the age-related need of the pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric and trauma patient with consideration of their developmental/psychosocial needs, environmental safety, educational needs, communication style and level of understanding. The Surgical Technician functions within their scope of practice. The Surgical Technician occasionally makes independent decisions within clear and established guidelines, standards and/or procedures .In collaboration with the DON and charge nurse, assists in the work flow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness and demonstrates career growth and development. Demonstrates through clinical practice the ability to perform all duties of the Surgical Technologist I/II. The Surgical Technician is responsible for the safe handling of medications on the surgical sterile field under the direction of the Physician and RN Circulator. Job Requirements Minimum Education Requirement: Completion of an accredited program or formal structured program (i.e., military service) or Nursing degree (LVN/LPN) from an accredited school of nursing. Minimum Experience Requirement: Must be competent as scrub in all scrub areas. Able to independently and proficiently scrub for at least three major clinical specialties (i.e. open heart, major vascular, trauma, neuro, eyes, major ortho cases). A minimum of two years post program experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting with similar patient case load. Prior experience functioning as a preceptor for new hires. Previous experience or ability to have an active role in performance improvement projects that enhance and promote the professional growth and development of the role of the surgical technologist. Excellent customer service skills required. Minimum License Requirement: Certified Surgical Technician or California LVN license preferred. BLS required. Shift: 6:45am - 3:15pm. Surgical Tech - Operating Room FT Evening (12-hour)

Under the direction of a RN, the Surgical Technician works cooperatively with all surgical team members functioning as scrub assistant to the surgeon and assistant surgeon during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician II is knowledgeable about, skilled in, and coordinates at least one area of expertise in the Operating Room. The Surgical Technician is responsible for adhering to all standards of care and for promoting teamwork among coworkers. Core Competencies Assists the circulating nurse in preparing the assigned operating room for surgery. Checks the surgeons preference cards before beginning all surgeries Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to approved techniques. Practices aseptic technique in opening surgical packs, sutures, and trays. Maintains a sterile field throughout each surgical procedure. Performs sponge and needle counts according to policies/ procedures. Assists in the transfer of patients from the surgical table to gurney. Operates surgical tables, lights, electro-surgical units, and instrumentation systems used during surgical procedures. Assists the circulating nurse in cleaning and preparing the operating room for surgeries to follow. Maintains a safe working environment: ensures gurneys are in locked position except when transporting, ensures side rails are in up position as indicated, keeps unit free of hazards/clutter, adheres to infection prevention guidelines, disposes of infectious waste properly Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion when discussing patient information.
