Overview DCH Health System is proud to offer Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Service at both our Regional and Northport Campuses. We specialize in the critical care of neonates and infants in our 21 bed unit at DCH Regional and 18 bed unit at Northport Medical Center. Our team of Neonatologists , Neonatal nurse practitioners, Neonatal nursing staff, NICU dedicated Respiratory Therapist, and NICU dedicated pharmacist provide in house care 24-7. We support a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care that also includes speech therapist, lactation consultants, child life therapists, and social workers. Our RN staff are especially skilled in the assessment and treatment of infants with complex, multisystem dysfunction. Our nurse to patient ratio is usually 1:2 or 1:3 depending on the acuity of the patient. They practice family-centered rounding to provide support and education so that families understand the needs for their baby. Overview The Home Health Visit Nurse works collaboratively with the Home Health RN Care Manager and other disciplines, providing skilled care, education, treatment, and emotional support to patients. Monitors and assesses the care provided while insuring the patient attains and maintains their highest level of functioning. Insures that the Physician and all members of the care team are aware of pertinent changes in the patient’s condition and progress toward goals. Collaborates with the Home Health RN Care Manager insuring that the established plan of care is appropriate and is implemented and/or modified based on the patient’s responses to treatment. Responsibilities Provides skilled nursing care to an assigned caseload of patients. Monitors the care, treatment, and service provided by other disciplines (SN, PT, OT, ST, MSS, RD, HH Aide) to insure patient receives the care required to improve their health status. Educates patients and their families on proper home health care strategies and procedures. Instructs and supervises the patient and family in the care of the patient and maintenance of a healthy environment for the patient. Overview Our Trauma Surgical Unit is primarily home to our acute care trauma and surgical patient population. Nurses in this area have a 1:6 ratio and specialize in an interdisciplinary team approach to each patient's specific needs. PCU is the only 24/7 acute care unit on the NMC campus that specializes in medical and surgical care and can accommodate up to 36 patients. Medical patients include dialysis and telemetry monitoring, along with other acute medical needs. Overview Our Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) is a four 4-bed unit that directs its resources principally towards the care of adult and geriatric patients with cardiac, thoracic, vascular and other surgical conditions requiring critical care located on 4 North North. Overview The Communication Center RN is responsible for coordinating patient admissions and transfers from physician offices and other outside facilities to DCH RMC and NMC. This role is responsible for assuring that patients have appropriate orders and patient status upon admission. The Communication Center RN participates in planning and assignment of hospital beds in conjunction with the Patient Accommodation Staff and Administrative Supervisor. Responsibilities Applies excellent customer service techniques while serving as the primary contact for Physicians who seeks to admit patients to DCH. Uses excellent organizational skills to achieve maximum efficiency in a fast-paced environment of the Communication Center Coordinates and facilitates the transfer of patients from physician offices and other health care facilities to DCH RMC and NMC using established processes and policies. Collects clinical information to help providers in determining the appropriate patient status and level of care. Collaborates with DCH RMC and NMC with accepting physician to arrange proper placement for patient. Serves as a patient/physician customer service liaison. Facilitates prompt bed assignments for newly admitted patients. Facilitates accurate placement of patients requiring special considerations due to infection control needs or other pertinent clinical situations. Facilitates bed assignment to patients in the Hospital Computer System. Collaborates with Nursing Supervisor and/or Manager of Patient Accommodations regarding patient placement issues. Accurately completes Communication Center data. Responsible for accurate and timely completion of patient registration and account data into the Hospital Computer System. Overview Our Renal Unit is a 36-bed unit that cares for our patients with kidney-related conditions such as acute or chronic kidney disease that sometimes requires renal replacement therapy. Nurses in this area have a 1:6 ratio and specialize in post-hemodialysis and ongoing peritoneal dialysis. This unit values robust collaboration with community nephrologists, family practice providers, and hospitalists to offer the best care possible for our renal patients. When patients are admitted to the DCH Rehabilitation Pavilion, located at Northport Medical Center, they continue to receive hospital care and close medical supervision while participating in the rehab program. Every patient receives 24-hour medical monitoring and care by our physiatrist, nurse practitioners/ physician assistants and rehab nurses. Providers round daily during the patients stay. Patient recovery is aided by the latest therapy equipment including body weight support systems for safe recovery of walking; treadmills for maximum repetitions; a Dynavision machine for improving reaction time and visual processing and a simulation vehicle to practice getting in and out of the vehicle for the ride home. Overview Our Medical Intensive Care Unit-1 (MICU-1) is a 16-bed unit. Our environment is upbeat, challenging, and embraces a strong team collaboration with nurses, Intensivists, and multiple ancillary departments – demonstrated daily by our multidisciplinary rounds. We care for critically ill adult patients who are being treated for Acute Respiratory Failure, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Sepsis, Gastrointestinal Bleeds, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), Hypertensive Crisis, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, and post-Cardiac Arrest requiring Targete d Temperature Management. Given the multidisciplinary approach our Intensivists provide 24/7, we commonly treat the most critically ill patients with complex illnesses across the West Alabama region. Our unit is unique because of the broad variety of patients admitted to the MICU, which allows for the development of critical thinking and diverse range of intensive care assessment skills. The Float Pool provides the expertise of experienced team members who are prepared to serve in many areas of our organization. This team is composed of Registered Nurses that at minimum have eighteen months of nursing experience in a hospital setting. These nurses must also have experience in the area(s) that they are hired to work in. Following orientation, the Float Pool team members are deployed to staff scheduling needs at RMC and NMC campuses. Overview Our Medical Respiratory Unit is a 42-bed unit primarily specializing in the care of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Nurses have a 1:6 ratio and provide care to predominately respiratory patients requiring treatment for pneumonia, shortness of breath, COPD or other various lung diseases. In addition, this unit will further provide care to a variety of medical patients with GI issues, diabetes, and occasional stroke and surgical patients. Patients in this area benefit from daily rounds with the entire interdisciplinary team. This unit will soon house a step-down unit for more acute respiratory patients at a 1:4 nursing ratio as well. Overview Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 8-bed high acuity unit that provides complex monitoring and treatment of adult cardiac patients. CICU receives patients from the Cath Lab, ED, and Acute Care areas who require specialized cardiac care. Nurses must exhibit high levels of professional competency. The nurses work to collaborate with all disciplines of the care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Overview Our General Surgical Unit is a 32-bed unit specializing in exceptional postoperative care for our general surgical patients. Nurses in this area have a 1:6 ratio and are trained in all aspects of postoperative care; including pain management, mobility, and bedside procedures. In this area especially, we value a comfortable and healing environment for each individual patient and their unqiue needs. This team will closely collaborate with local family practice physicians, hospitalists, as well as our surgeons. Responsibilities Plans, coordinates and directs quality, compassionate care by maintaining standards of professional nursing practice and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients/families. Provides leadership to other team members by articulating and delegating expected standards of care, supervising and encouraging team members, and supporting their contributions. Supervises LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, ED Tech, ED Clerical/PCA, CRSS and OTs. Assesses condition on each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis to include but not limited to the patient’s physical condition, psychological status, social status, spiritual and cultural needs, pain assessment/management, nutritional and functional status, developmental or age related factors, and discharge planning needs. Plans, provides, and documents patient and/or significant other education based on physical, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors, after identifying barriers to learning. Evaluates and regularly reevaluates patient care; coordinates care planning with patient, family, providers and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes. Assigns and delegates nursing care to team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the capabilities of the team members. Applies safety principles when performing care Accurately documents observations, care provided, and changes in care plan. Provides accurate handoff reports and participates in unit based huddles Assists in performance improvement (PI) activities by serving on PI teams as warranted, assisting with PI measures and supporting and implementing changes necessary for improvement. Qualifications Current approved Alabama Board of Nursing RN license or multi-state license required or ability to obtain prior to start. Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training required. BSN preferred, minimum Associates required Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
