Status: Full Time – 80 hours

Hours: Dayshift as scheduled plus call

MUST BE PROFICIENT IN ENDOVASCULAR VEIN HARVEST.

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Registered Nurse First Assistant responsible for providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient and Memorial Health System. Role will vary based on each procedure, area, surgeon and facility. The Registered Nurse First Assistant is accountable for maintaining AORN RNFA Standards of Practice. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Requirements:

Current licensure in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse.
Certification as RNFA by NASC required.
BLS required upon hire.
ACLS within one year of employment.
Endovein harvesting, radial artery harvesting, saphenous vein harvesting.
Verbal, clerical, numerical, and manual dexterity, color vision and near visual acuity.

Job Functions:

Following and completing assignments as given by the charge nurse.
Creating and maintaining an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department while maintaining a professional working relationship with staff and physicians.
Displays surgical conscience for the safety of the patient, other employees and themselves.
Preparing surgery suite for surgical procedures by gathering supplies and equipment while displaying knowledge of the surgeon’s preferences, prepares the prep tray in a sterile, economical, and uniform manner with the supplies needed.
Restocking supplies in surgery suite when procedures have ended for the day while monitoring surgery inventory and notifying appropriate individual(s) when supplies are needed.
Performs the appropriate preoperative skin scrub for the particular procedure and circumstance.
Demonstrates the understanding of aseptic technique and sterile vs. non-sterile areas.
Assists in surgical preparation by review patient chart while verifying any patient allergies and changing the prep solutions accordingly; assists with patient positioning; assists in urinary catheter placement; preps surgical site; and drapes patient with surgeon’s guidelines.
Operates equipment in a smooth, safe, and efficient mannerand performs technical skills according to policies and standards; learns new skills and seeks assistance appropriately.
Follows the pace set by the surgeon, and without delay in the thought process, participates in the procedure to maintain a smooth and efficient flow of the operation.
Displays and maintains knowledge of the different routines, procedures, surgical instruments and equipment, and anatomy which enables anticipation of the surgeon’s needs.
Assists in a variety of surgical procedures by assisting in placement and suturing of surgical drains and per surgeon’s directive, assists in retracting tissues, clamping, ligating, and cutting tissue, and closes all wound layers.
Synthesizes patient data and implements action plan appropriate to situation (good judgment, critical thinking).
Collaborates with appropriate disciplines in developing coordinated outcomes and interventions; interacts with team members regarding patient progress.
Ensure that the Surgery Department and Operating Rooms are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
Document all information in patient’s chart completely, correctly and accurately in accordance with policy.
Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment and follow established universal precautions in the use of gloves, gowns, and/or masks.
Assumes accountability and responsibility for attendance and timely completion of competencies, mandatory programs, unit specific requirement (i.e. ACLS), and unit meetings.
Maintains compliance in RQI.
Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
