Corewell Health is pleased to announce our 2026 Summer Immersion Program for nursing students looking to enhance their academic knowledge and further develop their clinical skills through a hands-on experience with a nurse preceptor.

The Nurse Extern will be paired up with a Nurse Preceptor for this 10-week program beginning May 18, 2026, working (3) 12-hour shifts per week. Working hours are generally 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.  We will offer placements in a variety of clinical specialties at each of our 8 hospital campuses which may include Med/Surg, Progressive Care, Critical Care, and Emergency.

  • Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 13, 2026.  (Please apply to all sites of interest in order to be considered at each site)
  • Orientation begins on May 18, 2026

To be considered for this program you must be currently enrolled and attending a BSN or ADN registered nursing program, nationally accredited through either CCNE or ACEN.  In addition, you must be graduating Fall/Winter 2026 or Spring 2027.

This 10-week immersion program requires a mandatory full-time attendance commitment including any enrichment sessions.

Scope of work

Under supervision of a Registered Nurse and following hospital policies and procedures, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients.

  • Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.
  • Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches and sitz baths or pericare.
  • Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
  • Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
  • Performs more complex nursing procedures and treatments after theoretical preparation and supervised clinical experience.
  • Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as they occur.
  • Performs assessments and documents accurate, complete and concise patient information on appropriate forms, including flow sheets, activity records, etc.
  • Participates in nursing staff conferences, in-services and educational opportunities.
  • Ensures the optimum utilization of personnel, supplies and equipment.
  • Provides copy of current school transcript to supervisor at the end of each marking period to confirm continued eligibility.
  • Assists in admitting, transferring and discharging patients.
  • Assists in pre-operative and post-operative care.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing. May be enrolled in an (accredited) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program.
  • Requires evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations – theory and clinical, required (transcripts must be provided at the time of hire)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS OR American Red Cross (ARC) BLS, required and must be valid through July 2026

McLaren Macomb is excited to announce an increase in wages for Nurse Externs to $30. Once become a RN, Staff nurses start at $39.33 per hour! Nurse Extern positions are for students that have completed their RN program. Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Assesses, implements, plans and evaluates care utilizing the nursing process. Performs a variety of simple and complex tasks and procedures. Reports changes in patient condition to the Registered Nurse. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, assesses, implements, plans and evaluates nursing care utilizing the nursing process. Creates, updates, and documents the plan of care based on patient outcomes. Provides teaching to patient and family and documents the same. Initiates discharge planning and provides discharge instructions and documents the same. Provides direct and indirect patient care. Performs a variety of procedures/skills with successful completion of training. Works collaboratively with team members to assure appropriate care is provided. Required: Successful completion of a school of nursing program by start or transfer date. Nurse Extern (NE) must provide proof of graduation within 30 days of the date of hire or effective date of transfer to NE role for internal candidates. Proof can be in the form of, Authorization to test NCLEX (RN National Council Licensing Exam) provided by the Michigan Bureau of Health Professions. Certified college transcripts conferring graduation. A personalized letter on the college’s nursing school letterhead with appropriate signature, confirming fulfillment of graduation requirements. Nurse Extern (NE) must provide written confirmation of NCLEX testing date(s) to Human Resources. Achieve Michigan RN licensure within 90 days of hire and provide proof to Human Resources and Manager, Patient Care Services. Nurse Extern must be electronically notified of their testing results. If unsuccessful in obtaining Michigan Licensure upon first attempt, NE will retest a minimum of 45 days after administration of the first exam, per the NCSBN policy. If NE is unable to successfully complete the nursing licensure exam after two attempts the NE will be removed from the NE position and placed in a Nurse Assistant position within 7 days or employment will be terminated. NE will move into an open Registered Nurse position the first full pay period following RN license date. This will also be the date of the new hourly pay rate and status change.
