**CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT**
POSITION SUMMARY
The ICU Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct, hands-on care to critically ill patients under the supervision and delegation of licensed nursing staff. Core functions include activities of daily living (ADLs), safe patient handling and proning/turning assistance, collection and accurate reporting of vital signs, line-aware positioning and transport, non-sterile dressing application, specimen collection, documentation in the electronic health record (EHR), and reinforcement of RN-led education. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
**LICENSED NURSING ASSISTANT**

Qualifications
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
Education:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant program
Certification/Licensure:
- Must have and maintain a current, active, and unrestricted Certification as a Nursing Assistant from the State of Arizona and must be in good standing with the Arizona Board of Nursing.
- Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association
Experience:
- Must have one year of ICU experience or 1.5 years of inpatient acute care experience.
LICENSED NURSING ASSISTANT (LNA)
Education:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant program
Certification/Licensure:
- Must have and maintain a current, active, and unrestricted license as a Nursing Assistant from the State of Arizona and must be in good standing with the Arizona Board of Nursing

Physical:
This position is very active and requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds. Must have the ability to occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 100lbs. May require long hours, frequent weekend work, and rotational holiday work. Must have the ability of far vision, near vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages, and frequent telephone use. Must have the ability to perform simple and firm grasping and fine manipulation of both hands, and frequent use of keyboards.
Mental:
Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations. Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff in creating, maintaining, and providing a safe environment.
- Explains treatments, observes patients, communicates observations or changes in patients’ condition to the appropriate healthcare team members, and initiates emergency measures such as basic life support.
- Shares in the responsibility of the initiation and maintenance of clinical records by charting of vital signs, height, and weight; intake and output, observations relative to patients’ condition, and reaction to treatment and nursing care given.
- Transports patients using a variety of equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, or other mechanisms, and assists in patient ambulation as delegated by licensed nursing staff.
- Assists in preparing a patient for procedures that include draping the patient for examinations or treatments and remaining with patients. May include performing duties such as holding instruments and adjusting lights.
- Handles multiple duties and tasks like changing bed linens, running errands, directing visitors, and answering the telephone.
- Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, height, weight, pulse, and respiration rates as directed, and may collect or transport specimens (e.g., urine)
- Cleans bedside equipment, such as perfusion pumps, bedside tables, Philips monitors, and patient cables, etc., with hospital-approved disinfectant wipes and/or cleaning procedures.
- Follows stringent cleanliness regimes to preclude the possibilities of infections and other diseases.
- Practice hand-off communication to the next LNA/CNA on shift or to the charge nurse
- Ensure proper and safe care of patient valuables and clothing, following the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Maintains positive working relationships with staff and contributes to teamwork within the department. Adheres to TCRHCC mission, goals, and policies.
- Assists in assembling and maintaining adequate supplies and shares responsibility for general upkeep of the department's equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrates appropriate uses of equipment, materials, and supplies during nursing care of the patient.
- Attends all mandatory in-services and department meetings as required and scheduled.
- Performs other duties assigned and floats to other units.
- Responsible for documenting treatments, tasks, and procedures they performed (e.g., turning, ADLS, blood sugars) in the patient’s electronic medical record (EHR).
Additional Duties for Inpatient Units:
- Answers call lights or intercom system promptly to determine and assist with patients' needs; reports any abnormal findings or complaints to the charge nurse.
- Assist patients with meals by direct feeding or bring a tray to them and set it up.
- Turns, repositions, or assists in bathroom/toileting of bedrest patients.
- Understand and practice preventive measures for bedsores in all patients.
- Initiate recreational activities with direction of licensed nursing staff, such as assisting with outdoor ambulation or delivering reading material to patients.
- Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty following isolation orders/procedures, including but not limited to face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher (if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe and acceptable method and discard used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for the most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction.
