Mercy Hospital’s 5B Orthopaedic Unit cares for planned orthopaedic post-op surgical patients (hip and knee replacements, spine, and neck surgeries), orthopaedic injuries (falls and car accidents), and trauma patients that don’t require critical care or are ready to come out of the ICU (gunshots, wounds, stabbings, car accidents, and traumatic falls). This collaborative unit works with Orthopaedic Surgeons, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and the trauma team. 5B is known for their community outreach for various donation drives throughout the year and their phenomenal caregiver retention, as there are a lot of experienced caregivers who have been here for 8+ years.

By joining the 5B team as an RN, you will assist fellow caregivers in delivering exceptional care, from initial introduction to final send-off. In this role, you will interact directly with patients, families and visitors, offering the opportunity to enhance their experience and supply healthcare education as needed. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.

A PRN caregiver in this position works variable days and hours| weekends and holidays.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Provide direct nursing care.

Implement and monitor patient care plans.

Monitor, record and communicate patients’ conditions.

Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.

Assess and coordinate patients’ discharge needs.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing (Diploma, ADN or BSN program)

Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

External applicants: two years of recent related nursing experience

Internal applicants: with less than two years’ experience, but post orientation/90-day probationary period, could be considered with the Chief Nursing Officer level review and approval

Will consider military RN experience

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
