Essential Functions Prepares the operating room for surgical cases, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly organized and available by applying principles of Universal Precautions, asepsis, and sterile technique. Maintains aseptic techniques and ensures sterile field integrity during surgical procedures. Anticipates the surgeon’s needs during procedures, efficiently passing instruments and materials as required. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety. Retains, labels, and documents specimens for pathology accurately, ensuring proper handling and transfer. Assists with patient positioning, draping, and transfer methods to ensure safety and comfort. Cleans, reprocesses, and sterilizes surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency protocols and takes appropriate action in emergency situations. Assists in maintaining and updating physician preference cards to reflect procedural requirements. Contributes to perioperative team efficiency by restocking supplies, returning equipment to storage, and ensuring operating rooms are ready for subsequent cases. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards. Qualifications Technical School certificate course in Surgical Technology required 15 continuing education hours related to the practice of surgical technology must be maintained annually to continue employment. This is tracked within the department by management from documentation provided by the Surgical Technician employee. 1-3 years of operating room surgical technician experience required 1-2 years of lead surgical technician responsibilities preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Expertise in surgical techniques, instrumentation, and sterile processing. Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond quickly during procedures. Strong organizational and time management skills to maintain efficient workflow. Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards, including safety and infection control protocols. Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with the perioperative team. Commitment to patient safety and high-quality care. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS Scheduled Weekly Hours: 24 Work Shift: 6a-6p Summary of the Job: Under direct supervision of the Charge Nurse and/or assigned circulating nurse, the Surgical Technologist/LPN performs procedures which render the safest and most effective service to the patient and surgeon. As a “scrubbed” member of the surgical team, it is his/her responsibility to anticipate the needs of the surgeon. He/She passes instruments, sutures, sponges and all other necessary sterile equipment to the operating team. Also assists with vaginal deliveries. Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology or LPN with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience on a women’s unit willing to obtain training on the job. BLS required on hire. BLS certification may be through any International Liaison Committee on resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to: Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association and American Red Cross. The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off. Preferred Qualifications: Surgical Technology Certification preferred. One (1) year Operating Room experience preferred. Physical Demands: Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required. Must be able to work with a moderate level of noise.
