The Assistant Nurse Manage/Clinical Supervisor is a member of the management team who assists the Nurse Manager with the daily operations of the nursing unit/department on a 24-hour basis. The Assistant Nurse Manager provides direct supervision of staff and may be required to work some weekend, holiday and shifts to ensure management presence and visibility according to departmental needs. The Assistant Nurse Manager participates in employee selection and evaluation, in scheduling and staffing, coaching and counseling, and in the development and adherence to clinical and budgetary standards.
The Assistant Nurse Manager/Clinical Supervisor provides leadership to unit-based work groups, i.e., PI and unit committees. He/she provides and coordinates direct patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensed by the State of Ohio as an R.N. required.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
BSN required or must obtain within 3 yrs.
ANCC recognized certification required or must obtain within 1 year.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience as a professional nurse in which potential administrative and supervisory competence has been demonstrated.
Computer literacy.
CPR Certification.

Has broad, fairly detailed level of knowledge of a specific area.
Gathers, organizes, verifies, composes, and/or analyzes data in the completion of several defined, multi-step procedures.
Produces final output within established standards.
May operate complicated equipment/machinery.

Makes decisions based on policy and/or consultation with co-workers/team members.
Requires judgement in selection of alternative courses of action.
May adapt standard principles to new or changed conditions.
Solutions generally based on past precedent with some risk taking involved in developing new approach.

Impacts multiple work areas on a day-to-day basis.
Provides information regularly to decision-making process.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:
Provides team leadership by assisting and training others.
Responds to non-routine and detailed inquiries from others who may not be knowledgeable in subject area.
Requires understanding other’s expectations/perspectives to collaborate and reach consensus on solutions.
PROVISION OF PATIENT CARE:
Supervises the care provided on the unit, rotating shifts and weekends to promote management visibility on a 24-hour basis.
Demonstrates clinical expertise in the execution of the nursing process and ensures compliance to standards by staff. Acts as a role model.
Participates in the development and evaluation of nursing standards and protocols for the delivery of safe, effective, compassionate care.
Provides and coordinates direct patient care.
Ensures staff use of I-Care communication skills.
CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT/PATIENT SAFETY:
Conducts patient rounds for the purpose of data collection, evaluation of care, and problem resolution.
Demonstrates awareness of and compliance to regulatory, safety, legal and ethical standards.
Understands and supports activities to improve unit milestones.
LEADERSHIP:
Assists the Nurse Manage in the development and promotion of effective communications with all “customers” of the unit.
Delegates, organizes and coordinates unit activities in a fair and consistent manner.
Demonstrates effective problem solving skills.
Participates in the development and evaluation of unit standards.
Supports implementation of new processes to improve patient care at the unit level.
Works collaboratively with other clinical leaders in patient flow positions.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE:
Actively participates in unit-based and departmental work groups as assigned.
Maintains clinical expertise to serve as a role model and a coach to staff.
Supports Magnet principles and initiatives.
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
Participates in the selection of staff.
Counsels, disciplines and intervenes as necessary with respect and consistency to ensure safe patient care, under the direction of the Nurse Manager.
Completes performance appraisals of unit staff members as assigned, acknowledging good performance, addressing problem areas with consistency, and encouraging professional growth.
Facilitates positive student experiences on the unit.
Assists in the orientation of new staff members, using hospital values as a base.
Assists in the review and finalization of schedules and modifies these as appropriate.
FISCAL MANAGEMENT:
Adheres to budgetary standards and assists in the design of delivery and staffing standards for the unit within established parameters.
Identifies opportunities for improvement in the provision of cost-effective care and implements these with the Nurse Manager.
