JOB PURPOSE: The Advanced Practice Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner – Inpatient/Outpatient will provide quality comprehensive behavioral health care to a variety of patients, in an efficient and cost-effective manner, for psychiatric treatment to patients at El Rio Health, outpatient and/or inpatient in partnership with community hospitals. The Advanced Practice Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner – Inpatient/Outpatient delivers high-quality care for the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral health and the physical and emotional support of patients and families. The Advanced Practice Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner -Inpatient/Outpatient provides care to new and established patients in accordance with the licensure and the highest standards of quality and integrity.
The Advanced Practice Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner - Inpatient/Outpatient and clinical staff engage in the delivery of medical care in conjunction with budgetary, staffing, quality, and other functions of the teams which support the mission and goals of El Rio Health.
The completion of these duties, tasks, or assignments requires a high level of independent judgment and decision-making in the execution of the scope or authority and responsibility for the position. The Advanced Practice Provider - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner - Inpatient/Outpatient must be able to successfully perform all essential functions, duties, tasks, assignments, and responsibilities assigned within the El Rio organization at a location assigned by management. The incumbent in this position works with general direction and review and has discretion and independent judgment authority with respect to matters of significance for the assigned area.
The primary goal of the El Rio Health Behavioral Health Medical Provider – Inpatient/Outpatient APP Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is to support El Rio’s Mission of providing comprehensive, quality health care that is affordable and accessible to all who may have healthcare needs, by successfully performing the primary essential functions.

Essential Job Functions:
- Essential functions may vary based on employment status such as full time, part time, per diem status or outpatient versus inpatient.
- Performs patient histories and physicals, risk factor assessment, ordering of therapeutic and diagnostic tests
- Analyzes reports test results medical records and examinations to diagnose condition of patients and proposes treatment options
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented emotional and medical conditions.
- Maintains Medical Records with relevant patient data and case presentations for all services rendered, tests ordered, prescriptions, advice, and communications, in a manner consistent with regulatory agencies, diagnostic, and procedural coding documentation requirements, and the standards of good medical care.
- Records complete, timely and accurate medical records in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Prepares clinical reports and correspondence concerning patients under his/her care to physicians, hospitals, and other individuals and facilities.
- Works collaboratively with medical director and team for appropriate consults.
- Provides care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of emotional and physical health, prevention of illness and treatment of disease through lifespan
- Formulates, executes, and reviews healthcare education delivered to patients and families for diseases prevention.
- Ensures smooth communication and coordination with other health professionals for effectively delivering outpatient or hospital clinical service to patients.
- Evaluates patients, performing examinations, and establishing preventive health practices.
- Cultivates a climate of trust and compassion for patients.
- Serves as an advocate for patients and families in navigating the healthcare system.
- Attends patient emergencies in the clinic and hospital environment.
- As part of an interdisciplinary team provides care to El Rio Health outpatient and/or inpatient.
- Works independently with other members of the medical team including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents or students as assigned.
- Agrees to teach trainees should the need arise.
- May take overnight or weekend phone calls.
- Attends program and committee meetings as assigned.
- Maintains active staff status and appropriate credentialing/privileging per hospital staff bylaws as appropriate.
- Ensures compliance with medical staff bylaws, rules, policies and procedures and regulations on their assigned unit.
- Delivers healthcare in a professional manner that strives to meet or exceed those criteria set forth by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and The Joint Commission (TJC), as well as the internal standards that seek continuous quality improvements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with all federal and state Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
- Adheres to policies and procedures, and corporate compliance with laws, regulations, standards, or requirements for Federal, State, and local sources for El Rio Health and partnering community hospitals.
- Maintains good standing with the Federal and State agencies avoiding any action that may lead to sanctioning, exclusion, or other ineligible status, and will notify employer immediately of any action, notice, or event that could lead to exclusion or the allegation of malpractice.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment in compliance with all Policies and Procedures including but not limited to work areas, workstations, examination rooms, hand washing, infection prevention and control etc. for this position.
- Demonstrates an understanding of and proficiency with the application of all compliance and reporting requirements respective to Joint Commission Certification (JCC) standards, confidentiality, values policies, and standards.
- Adheres to El Rio Health organizational and department specific policies, procedures, confidentiality, ongoing quality improvement objectives, confidentiality, values, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Promptly reports any safety concerns or incidents through the appropriate channels.
- Complies with terms of all payor contracts and any other legal requirements concerning discrimination, access to care and the standard of care.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Master’s or Doctorate’s degree from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing Program.
If applicable, equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, and must be directly related to the functions and responsibilities of the job.
Required Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
- Active and unencumbered Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Licensure in the state of Arizona.
- Active Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in specialty area of Psychiatry.
- Active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire.
- Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS) and advanced life support certifications if relevant to the practice area or facility; (Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Level I fingerprint clearance card: current valid and in good standing or have applied for it within seven working days after beginning employment.
- Employees in this position are required to have reliable transportation that can meet any operational reassignments of the organization during the workday. If an employee is driving during work hours, the employee is required to possess a valid driver’s license and must comply with Arizona vehicle insurance requirements.
- Must successfully complete training and certifications required by partnering hospital.
Preferred Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities:
- Doctorate’s degree from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing Program.
- One (1) or more years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in an acute, outpatient or ancillary healthcare environment.
- Clinical experience working in a Community Health Center Environment
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages.
