NURSING SUPERVISOR (D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Medical Acute Care, Level 12)

Job Summary The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (12 CICU) is a 16-bed adult cardiac medicine intensive care unit. The unit specializes in patients who have heart failure, acute MI, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart defects, bridge to transplant, as well as patients requiring interventions. Patients may require the following therapies: Swan-Ganz catheter with FICK calculations, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella devices, CRRT, or Therapeutic Hypothermia. 12 Medical Acute Care (12 MAC) is a 32-bed adult cardiac/telemetry/stepdown unit. 12MAC nurses provide specialty care for a variety of cardiology patients. Common diagnoses include heart failure, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome, and pulmonary hypertension. The patient population includes those with Implanted Ventricular Assist Devises (VADs) and those receiving prostacyclin infusions. Staff members collaborate with the inter-disciplinary team to provide the best care and work collaboratively as a team. This team consists of Clinical Nursing Director, CNS, Educator, Supervisors, Attending Physicians, Fellows, Residents, and Interns, Respiratory therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, and Care Management. The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that houses 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000-square-foot hospital which also features 20 surgical and three interventional radiology suites is adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. The nursing supervisor will provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice within the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion, Level 12, CICU and Cardiac Step-Down Units. Participate as an active member of the leadership team focusing on daily staffing, scheduling as well as operational needs. Additionally, the nursing supervisor will play an active role in recruitment efforts, hiring, continuous quality improvement, safety, customer service, education, and research. To participate as a member of the leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the health system. Responsibilities* To assist the department director in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research. To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the Michigan Medicine’s mission and goal statements. Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director. Responsibilities Include Personnel Management: Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff. Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff. Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff. Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans. Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Nurse Manager. Clinical Practice Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the Nurse Director. To provide clinical assessment., mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff. Management Of Clinical Area Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care. Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation. Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns. Quality Assurance And Research Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable. Required Qualifications* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Required Educational Requirements Applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing. Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Minimum two (2) years (within the last 5 years) RN experience in critical care nursing. Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.), for the list visit here . Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including; charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience. Previous supervisory experience. Master of Science Nursing. Knowledge of the Michigan Medicine policies and practices. Consultative and teaching skills. Unit committee membership. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with nurse director, supervisors, unit leadership, administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates. Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases. Work Schedule Hours/Week: 40 hours Shift: Evening shift and weekends will be required based on unit need. Location: D.
