POSITION SUMMARY
The Emergency Room Tech assists and supports the nursing and medical staff of the
Emergency Department, to perform patient care, and environmental tasks, and manage supplies and
equipment to ensure the patient-focused, cost-effective operation of the department.

The Emergency Room Tech will also be responsible for assisting the RN with performing education and observing chemical tests on patients’ or control specimens by clinical staff using the lab and correctly records appropriate results and uses and maintains all laboratory equipment correctly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assists the RNs and physicians in providing technical care of the patients by: Documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy and IV starts, performing EKGs, transporting patients, placing patient on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performing Point of Care Testing, performing wound care, and obtaining lab specimens and documents all care/procedures provided
  • Performs urine drug screens and/or breathalyzer tests, once checked off or trained
  • Assists the physician with physical exams, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Applies a variety of orthopedic splints and fits patients for crutches
  • Ensure that patient care areas, storage rooms, and equipment are clean and maintained
  • Cleans equipment and workspace (including patient rooms, restrooms, waiting room, and nurse’s station)
  • Ensure that there is a sufficient amount of lab supplies, linens, stock room supplies
  • Assists with unloading supplies into Emergency Center
  • Perform POC and QC lab testing
  • Perform daily check of ABC equipment in each room
  • Maintain temperature logs in Pharmacy and Lab
  • Responsible for changing out Sharp’s containers
  • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and refers for repair
  • Perform patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff, documenting on the medical record
  • Ensure an adequate supply of equipment needed for patient care and is responsible for stocking items such as: linens, wall mounts, thermometer probes and Otoscope probes, upper and lower drawers, vital sign machine, IV carts, ortho carts, urine cups and wipes, triage wound supplies, nourishment counter, patient and waiting room refrigerators
  • Perform quality control procedures and maintain records on these checks
  • Perform calibrations in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements
  • Ensures proficiency testing specimens are done at each center in compliance with policy
  • Oversees documentation of temperatures/humidity checks
  • Monitors appropriate send out lab procedures
  • Maintains current appropriate and needed policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remain informed on all current technologies
  • Maintain inventory of necessary supplies and submit orders for restocking as needed
  • Demonstrate the values to team concept on a consistent basis
  • Interact professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory
  • Responsible for documenting correct information for compliance purposes.
  • Remain knowledgeable about appropriate testing procedures
  • Performs daily opening and closing duties as assigned (see attached)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

SAFETY/INFECTION CONTROL

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to regulations and ER policies and procedures pertaining to safety, emergency preparedness, infection control, OSHA, fire safety and hazardous materials

ER POLICY

  • Ensure personal appearance is clean and neat
  • Responsible for wearing ER identification at all times
  • Attend all ER required meetings and in-service education
  • Remain flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates in temporary assignments
  • Compliance with attendance standards
  • Demonstrate flexibility when changes in assignments are necessary

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education & Experience 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years’ experience in an Emergency Room setting or 1-3 years’ experience as an Emergency Medical Technician EMT-P (or equivalent) required

Certificates/Licenses

Emergency Med Tech (EMT), Per Diem - Critical Care Transport

Description Location: UNC REX (Raleigh) or UNC Holly Springs Hospital Critical Care Transport REX Critical Care Transport services work closely with neurologists, pulmonologists, emergency physicians, hospitalists and cardiologists to provide a continuum of care between tertiary facilities and UNC REX Hospital. Overview Performs routine and emergency Nuclear Medicine procedures. Responsible for mentoring and training students in a cooperative learning environment. Responsibilities Performs Nuclear Medicine procedures including IV injections of radiopharmaceuticals, use of spect camera and computers and processing of computer generated images. Keeps accurate records of receipt, disposal and administration of radioactive material. Performs required Quality Control procedures on camera and equipment and document results.
