The Surgical Technologist will maintain a sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are used to prevent contamination and infection. The Surgical Technologist will also assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prior to an operation, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions. Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.
- Consistently follows standard procedures for surgical interventions, along with the preferences of surgeons and CRNAs.
- Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites. Also transports, positions patients on a table, and covers them with sterile surgical drapes.
- Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile operating room attire to work in the sterile field established around the patient and to handle the sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in the procedure.
- Anticipates the surgeon's needs, passing instruments, and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.
- Anticipates and prepares for the entire day by utilizing computerized pull sheets, pulling needed equipment, supplies and instruments (including supplies for add-on cases) in a timely manner, as appropriate.
- Assembles instrumentation and supplies on the back table in a logical order. Keeps instruments clean, assembles and maintains counted items in view of the circulator.
- Demonstrates knowledge of OR specific safety practices (positioning, environmental control, counts, transportation). Properly uses equipment and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
- Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies dressings.
- Cleans and restocks the operating room.
- Adheres to AORN standards of the operating room.
- Assists with flexible endoscopy.
- Demonstrates ability to properly clean, disinfect and process flexible scopes.
- Cleans, tests and safely operates a variety of sterilizers and decontamination equipment, following work instructions
- Maintains accurate documentation related to the above activities
- Performs biological testing weekly, determines and records results.
- Identifies, processes, packages, sterilizes, and delivers items for all hospital areas.
- Responsible for interpreting results of daily air removal tests. Performs the necessary steps to secure maintenance and/or the decision to stop use of equipment until necessary adjustments have been made by the Engineering Department.
- Labels instruments appropriately as per policy and procedure.
- Assembles trays per count sheets, ensuring accuracy and noting shortages and equipment out for repair.
- Knowledgeable of function of equipment, biological and chemical indicator and facility recall procedure.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Must have a high energy level with ability to work under the stress of the operating room atmosphere and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility.
- Ability to verify visual and audio alarms on machines.
- Ability to prioritize actions and readily adapt to changes in procedure
- Must be able to demonstrate full knowledge of current position's and department's relationship to flow of services and care plan of the customer. Needs to demonstrate understanding of all other services of the organization.
- Must demonstrate required competency at all levels in providing care or service to all customers based on age, sex, cultural and demonstrated needs.
- Maintains required skills, licensure, regulatory requirements, and credentials needed to perform assigned duties.
Education and Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology or LPN nursing program.
- Must have at least two years of experience in the surgical setting.
Physical Requirements:
- Full range of body motion and flexibility.
- Ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop, and bend.
- Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, and sharps and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals including cleaning agents and disinfectants.
- Exposure to electrical current.
- May have irregular hours and long periods of standing.
- Extensive walking, moderate sitting, standing, and lifting.
