Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Summer-Student Nurse Extern. This program will start June 1st 2025.

In this role, the successful candidate Performs patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by
the professional registered nurse. Works closely with the professional nurse to determine patient needs, implements care
activities, and reports patient/family responses. Carries out patient assignments under the direct supervision of the
registered nurse, with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes. Reports to the RN specific functions
completed. Observes the RN in the performance of professional nursing care.

Job Responsibilities:

Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.Participates

• Demonstrates an understanding of the rationale and basic principles of assigned patient's treatment/care
procedures.
• Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of assigned patients.
• Utilizes nursing interventions to prevent the complications of bed rest and immobility.
• Provides assistance to patients with activities of daily living and encourages appropriate self-care.
• Incorporates infection prevention/control guidelines, and risk management in patient care.
• Measures vital signs.
• Applies clean dressings.
• Performs intake and output.
• Provides oral suctioning and mouth care.
• Utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver patient care.
• Demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care by identifying physical,
psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, religious, and development needs, and adapting interventions accordingly.
• Observes the nursing process, i.e., assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, and evaluation
under the direction of the registered nurse.
• Observes and reports changes in the patient's condition and environment to the registered nurse.
• Supports patient's privacy and confidentiality.
• Verbally and non-verbally communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and other staff.
• With additional training and demonstrated competency, may also be permitted to perform the following clinical
functions and treatments: Obtains 12 lead EKGs. Uses a glucometer.
• Participates in the planning and evaluation of nursing care by active participation in conferences.
• Assumes responsibility for observing patient/family responses, changes in patient condition, results of
procedures performed and reports same to the designated registered nurse.
• Completes written documentation of these activities and observations, obtaining co-signature by the
supervising registered nurse.
• Cooperates and interacts with the interdisciplinary team members when carrying out patient care.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the NYUMC's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of
duties.
• Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
• Participates in classroom or unit-based educational learning activities.
• Observes patient teaching.
• Seeks learning resources for identified learning needs.
• Recognizes own limitations and requests assistance when needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a nursing program.

Students must be a rising senior and or rising final year nursing student with a graduation date of Winter 2026 or Spring 2027.

Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 of higher.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

REGISTERED NURSE: University Hospital 5D Surgical ICU (Graduate Nurse Internship)

Job Summary This position is 4-month internship program which prepares the new Graduate nurse for a Registered Nurse position in 5D-SICU. Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted bedside clinical experience. A two (2) year commitment with a minimum of 36 hours/week (0.9 FTE) to the SICU is required after the completion of the 16-18 weeks of the orientation period. The orientation period will be a combination of day and nightshifts to meet orientation and learning needs. The nursing position will be a night shift position upon completion of the externship and orientation period. Responsibilities* 5D Surgical Intensive Care Unit: The SICU is a 20 bed adult intensive care unit caring for patients who have had major operations or those experiencing complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring. Typically this encompasses those patients with peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease. Often these patients present with multi-system failure requiring swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte corrections. In addition, SICU receives adult liver transplants and is a major referral center for adult ECMO/Respiratory failure patients. This ICU also may receive overflow from the Trauma, Neuro, Medicine and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. SICU charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers through out the University Hospital. SICU offers 12 hour night shifts, comprehensive orientation, career development and the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population.
