JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist – Surgical Services assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients within Surgical Services (Operating Room, Sterile Supply/Decontamination, and Endoscopy). Functions as a member of the sterile team in creating and maintaining a sterile field and passing instruments to surgeons. Understands procedure being performed and anticipates needs of the surgeon. Performs and participates in disassembly/decontamination, assembly/bundling, sterilization and high-level disinfection processes and the storage and distribution of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Graduate from an accredited program for Surgical Technologists.

Preferred/Optional: None

EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES 

Minimum Required: Must have thorough knowledge of principles of asepsis. Demonstrates excellence in customer service and professional conduct. Must have excellent communication skills. Possesses and displays a sense of responsibility and effective organizational and communication skills. Is able to effectively prioritize work when dealing with multiple tasks. Functions independently to complete assigned tasks.

Preferred/Optional: 1-2 years’ experience in an Operating Room or Ambulatory Care Center.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES 

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position.  Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse. Performs scrub assistance for all procedures. Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover. Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case. Begins Sterilizing process while in the surgical suite by counting for completeness of tray, initiating cleansing/sterilizing process. Accesses supplies in medication storage areas, including needles and syringes. Performs safety checks on equipment and troubleshoots equipment to ensure proper operation and good working conditions of equipment as needed. Performs proper collection of blood specimens using proper protocol and technique. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or GED. Completion or graduate of a New Jersey approved or accredited program for surgical technicians or graduate of an LPN school with current LPN license. Experience: One year of work experience in healthcare surgical services preferred. Specialty surgical services may require specific training, experience, knowledge, and skills.
