This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with SEIU-UHW. What You Will Do
Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment is functioning properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist that applies clinical expertise in the roles of scrub surgical technologist.

Required Qualifications

  • 3 Years Experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital setting.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED
  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR NBSTSA Certified Surgical First Assistants (CSFA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Tech in Surgery - Certified (NCCT), TS-C (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing -REQUIRED

  • Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited program is required (e.g. Certified Surgical Technologists (CST), or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), or Tech in Surgery-Certified (NCCT)).


Essential Functions

  • Clinical practice

    Accountable for instrument trays to match the instrument list provided in the tray. Need to escalate when incomplete.
    Update surgeon's preference card per entity specific process.
    Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
    Scrubs, gowns and gloves.
    Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
    Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to operation and before incision is closed.
    Complies with all count policies and procedure.
    Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
    Helps in draping sterile field.
    Passes instruments etc. to surgeon during procedure.
    Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
    Cleans and prepares instruments for decontamination when needed.
    Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
    Assists in prepping room for the next patient when needed.
  • Problem resolution

    Identifies any deviation from expected procedure/policy.
    Reports any patient safety issues.
    Identities problems and takes appropriate action, without prompting to accomplish department objectives and improved quality of care.
    Participates in teaching.
    Role models the Sharp Experience.
    An active team member (i.e. works additional shifts or different shifts as appropriate).
  • Professional development

    Is an expert in the performance and demonstrated mentorship in at least 2 specialties(i.e. spine, total joint, cardiac) and/or mentors and performs in at least 1 specialty.
    Builds relationships with clinical staff, physicians, and other healthcare team members to facilitate patient and organizational outcomes.
    Participates in professionals organization.
    Enhances own professional growth through self-evaluation and setting and meeting own developmental goals.
    Serves as a preceptor for new surgical technologists and/or student surgical technologists.

    Promote and contribute to the enhancement of quality care for the surgical patient.

Job Specific Responsibilities and Tasks: Duties may include but are not limited to : Core Duties: • Perform the full spectrum of sterile techniques, setting up surgical trays, preparing and draping patients for surgery, and assisting with post-operative dressings.• Ensure surgical packs are cleaned and packed for sterilization after every procedure, to include restocking surgical supplies.• Maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the cleaning of clinical spaces, operating rooms, and medical equipment, or by guiding other personnel in the environmental maintenance. Additional Duties: • Perform a full range of surgical/operating room technician services to include performance as a scrub technician; pass instruments to surgeon and/or surgical assistants; assist circulating nurse to prepare patients for surgery and assists in preparation of patient’s operative site; assist the anesthesiologist; adjust lights and other equipment as directed; verify proper identification of patients and scheduled surgical procedure; review to ensure appropriate consent forms are complete; assist in positioning patient in prescribed position for surgery; and assist as directed in moving patient to and from the surgery site. • Count (with the circulating nurse) sponges, needles and instruments used during surgery and assist in clean-up of operating room using standard MTF policies. • Prepare operative specimens as directed, label and deliver them to the laboratory and move equipment to and from operating rooms as necessary for scheduled procedures. • Provide pick-up and delivery service for such items as blood gasses, supplies, specimens, and materials to support Operating Room needs. • Conduct inventory; determine need; orders, obtains, receives, and stores surgical supplies; and inspect and monitor stocking of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) crash cart. • Respond to CPR situations, acute respiratory problems and other emergencies as needed. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : • Degree: Certificate • Education: Graduate from Surgical Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or completion of a formal training program provided by any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists or operating room technicians. • Certification: Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-Surgery (TS-C) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or possess a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) certification as a surgical technician and/or operating room technician. • Experience :the HCW will possess a minimum of 1 year of full-time experience as a Surgical Technologist within the preceding 2 years, including experience assisting Main Operating Room surgeons (to include but not limited to OB/GYN, Orthopedic, Pediatric, and Urology). * Security : Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance. * Life Support Certification: Possess a current AHA OR ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification. Pay Scale: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour, to be determined based on qualifications, experience, and location
