UNC Health Rex is seeking a dynamic coordinator to shape clinical learning experiences for nursing students and support new grad nurses as they transition into confident, successful practitioners. 

In this highly visible role, you’ll be at the center of our nursing talent pipeline—building strong partnerships with local nursing programs, supporting students through their clinical learning journey, and supporting the Nurse Residency Program for new graduate nurses. You’ll collaborate with Rex clinical leaders, Clinical Education, and Talent Acquisition to create meaningful mentorship, professional development, and retention strategies that truly make a difference. Occasional local travel is required as you help expand and strengthen our clinical partnerships. 

Summary: The Nurse Student and Residency Program Coordinator is responsible for oversight of the nursing student clinical experience at UNC Health.  This role will work collaboratively with local nursing program leaders and students to promote UNC Health for clinical hours.  This role will also coordinate the Clinical Nurse Residency Program to ensure new graduate nurses experience a supportive, educational, and collaborative environment throughout their first 12 months as a Clinical Nurse. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement nursing student clinical experience program.
  • Meet with local nursing program leaders and students from each level to promote UNC Health. Coordinate clinical hours and unit assignments for clinical rotations.
  • Coordinate meetings with all nursing instructors while on campus to ensure effective partnerships. Attend pre/post clinical huddles with instructors.
  • Attend college programs and events as requested, including onsite educational events, recruitment events, and graduations.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all nursing students during and after their clinical rotation. Round on all nursing students throughout their clinical experience. Develop and conduct quarterly student surveys to ensure continuous improvement in clinical experiences. Create nursing student profile to assist with clinical experiences and recruitment efforts.
  • Coordinate recruitment efforts toward nursing students, working collaboratively with HR and Talent Acquisition. Arrange meet and greets with hospital leadership, promote hospital culture and career opportunities. Coordinate Nurse Extern hiring and engagement of externs throughout program. Provide metrics related to recruitment of students into CN I positions and prepare recruitment reports as requested.
  • Support the Clinical Nurse I Residency Program ensuring a smooth and supportive onboarding experience.
  • Develop CN I mentorship program. Promote mentorship program and coordinate assignment of mentors for CN Is. Provide training and program information to mentors. Coordinate quarterly CN I cohort social meetings to provide opportunity for CN Is across the organization to connect and develop relationships.
  • Coordinate and provide professional development courses for nursing students and CN Is to promote continual education. Partner with Clinical Education, Talent Development, and other resources for developmental opportunities.

Nurse Extern positions are for students that have completed their RN program. Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Assesses, implements, plans and evaluates care utilizing the nursing process. Performs a variety of simple and complex tasks and procedures. Reports changes in patient condition to the Registered Nurse.
