How you make a difference

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides assistance and collects data in the delivery of patient care in a correctional setting, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. As part of this role, the LVN directs and guides patient teaching and activities in accordance with their education, demonstrated competencies, and the Nursing Practice Act (NPA). The LVN works closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality care and compliance with established policies and procedures. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient assessment and treatment planning in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act and Correctional Health Services policies. 
  • Administer medications and implement medical plans as directed by the Health Care Practitioner, utilizing proper techniques and procedures. 
  • Respond to emergencies and maintain safety through the implementation of established protocols and precautions. 
  • Implement nutrition and therapeutic diets and assist in medical procedures as necessary to meet patient needs. 
  • Document nursing encounters and communicate information to healthcare staff and supervisory personnel. 

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

Experience

  • One (1) or more years clinic experience preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state employed.
  • Current CPR certification

Provides instructions to patients regarding treatment plans, medications, and follow-up needed by phone. Communicates effectively with other healthcare team members, including accurate documentation in patient charts. Follows OSHA regulations and safety guidelines. Responsible for maintaining all crash carts and quarterly auditing of medications and defibrillators. Documentation of completion. Follows HIPM policies and procedures. Respect and maintain patient confidentiality. Complete supply ordering. Handles patient phone calls to the nurse and refers information to the physician or provider per Telephone Communication Protocol. Returns phone calls to patients to communicate the treatment plan effectively and documents all interactions in the patient's record. Schedules patient office visits as needed and coordinates with Front Office Staff. Approves pharmacy refills per protocol. Cleans and disinfects equipment/instruments per protocol. Familiar with and able to assist in stress tests. Utilizes correct patient consent for stress testing. Familiar with emergency treatment equipment and protocols. Responds calmly and efficiently during emergencies. Assist as assigned with emergency equipment monthly supply checklist. Initiates training of new LVN team members. Reviews PT/INRs and communicates results and medication changes as needed. Reviews remote patient pacemaker and defibrillator transmissions and provides results to physicians. Communicates effectively urgent messages when necessary. Requirements Graduate of an accredited school of nursing One year of nursing experience is preferred. Cardiology Medical Office experience desirable. Current Texas LVN license, current CPR certification. About Katy.
