The Department of Hematology & Medical Oncology is comprised of physicians, nurses, researchers, advanced practice providers (APP) and other healthcare professionals specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers or disorders of the blood. We believe in compassionate patient care, and we will always put patients and their family members first. By joining the Medical Oncology team as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you will assist the five physicians along with other caregivers in providing top-quality patient care to patients in the Cancer Center. You will play a key role in rooming patients, reconciling their health information, answering in-basket messages, answering patient questions, providing reassurance, and communicating provider recommendations to the patients. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who seeks to enhance their nursing skills through learning opportunities and professional development.    

A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 8:00AM – 5:00PM.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide professional nursing care to patients.  
  • Administer medication.  
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation in medical records and files.  
  • Complete authorization forms and laboratory requisitions.   
  • Implement pain management assessments and documentation.  
  • Recognize changes in patients' status and report pertinent information to Charge Nurse or Physicians. 
  • Educate patients, families and others. 
  • Adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals as outlined by JCAHO.  
  • Follow Code Blue protocol.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of an accredited LPN program  
  • Florida Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross   
  • Knowledge of infection control practices 
  • Experience with technology 
  • Computer literacy  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of clinical experience 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good hand-eye coordination, involves extensive standing walking and occasional lifting.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
