Variable RISE Camp Paha Nurse Assistant

JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Assistant is responsible for assisting the Nurse during Medication Administration Training, assist in delegating medication procedures for certain campers to Leadership staff, tend to all camper injuries and illnesses that occur at camp, assist in feedings, and assist in ratio when needed. The Assistant Nurse is considered a part of the administrative team at camp and is leadership qualified, as defined by Colorado State Licensing.

 

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

 

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position).

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform job in a professional manner, i.e. dress appropriately, arrive on time, stay until the end of your shift and assist Paha nurse.
  • Work as Student Nurse or Certified Nurse’s Assistant under the direction of the Paha Nurse and the Paha Director.
  • Assist Nurse in making physical checks of Paha campers and participants the first week of Paha for any health concerns. Example - bruises, cuts, pressure sores, infections, skin and scalp diseases or rashes.
  • Assist with all medicines or first aid articles brought to Camp Paha or the PAT program by the campers, participants and staff, administering all medications and treatments according to prescribed physician’s orders and sound nursing knowledge and assessment.
  • When needed, provide campers/participants/staff with first aid after appropriate nursing assessment. Support the retention of accurate records of all medications, treatments, injuries, etc., of all campers.
  • Discuss important health items about campers/participants with their individual counselors/group staff as needed. For example: diet, exercise, treatments, and other relevant information regarding a camper/participant’s wellbeing during the summer.
  • Prepare, maintain, and instruct counselors/staff in the use of first aid kits for emergency use on hikes and other off site trips. All first aid treatments performed by counselors and staff must be reported back to the nurse as soon as possible for reevaluation, further treatments, and recording as needed.
  • Attend and participate in pre-camp training and regular staff meetings. 
  • Provide leadership for other staff as designated or directed by the Administration Team.
  • Assist counselors and staff with the physical, social and emotional needs of the campers and participants. This may include feeding and helping with other personal needs.
  • Be available to staff as needed for assistance with personal health, needs or concerns.
  • Be willing to participate in off-site field trips to support campers/participants/staff as directed by the Paha Nurse or Administration team.
  • Be a good example for campers, participants and staff.
  • Keep current list of emergency numbers and know procedures to obtain other emergency medical help.
  • Assist staff in complying with the ratio requirements that 1 Counselor supervises no more than 4 Campers at one time.
  • Abide by and enforce the R.I.S.E. program’s “No Isolated Moments” policy where, when one or more campers are present, there must be at least 2 staff present as well (at minimum; see ratio requirements above).
  • Follow all American Camping Association (ACA) accreditation and Child Care License standards as set forth by R.I.S.E. Coordinator and those respective agencies.
  • Be familiar with City of Lakewood policies and procedures and adhere to those procedures.
  • Able to plan and implement a program of health and safety for the entire Camp Paha / PAT program, as supported by the Paha Nurse.
  • Create med notes for all Activity Specialist prior to the first day of Paha.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Hours of Work

Weekday (Monday through Friday) hours 8/8:30M-4/4:30pm

  • Supports participants at all times in program participation.
  • Works as a part of team by supporting others and taking initiative.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:

  • Receives general supervision from Paha Director and Paha Nurse.

 

Essential Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Experience caring for and patience to work with people with disabilities.
  • Experience or background in school, public health, camp nursing, or working with people with disabilities is beneficial.
  • Ability to complete the Colorado Medications Administration Certification (training provided).
  • Must furnish written proof of at least 480 contact hours supervising children (up to age 18). Contact hours can be a summation of full or part time work and must come from a previous supervisor on company letterhead.
  • Perform job in professional manner (proper dress, prompt, courteous, flexible).
  • Ability to problem solve and work with staff members.
  • Must hold current First Aid and CPR cards, by the Paha start date (training provided).
  • Must be able to clear TRAILS Registry prior to the first day of work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents and caregivers.
  • Possess ability in leadership and organization.
  • Ability to respond to questions from groups, managers, participants, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with participants, families and caregivers, both verbally and non-verbally.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to interpret and understand instructions, both written and oral.

 

Education

  • High school diploma or Equivalent
  • Some College (College degree preferred)

 

Required Certifications

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications (training provided upon hire)

 

 

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) (Preferred)

Physical and Mental Requirements

 

Lifting or Carrying:             

  • Must be able to safely lift/pull/push (with assistance) weight of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform or assist in participant transfers in varying situations.

 

Pushing and Pulling:            

  • Ability to manipulate program supplies as needed.
  • Ability to push/pull participants using various assistive devices.

 

Body Positions/Movements: 

  • Ability to stand, walk, run, sit, bend, stoop, squat, twist, and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform and assist with activities of daily living with participants.

 

Hearing:                                

  • Must be able to communicate with staff and participants via phone and in person.

 

Vision:

  • Must be able to instruct, observe, and demonstrate all program aspects.
  • Must be able to recognize and prevent/redirect potentially-risky behaviors.
  • Must be able to perform basic office functions.

 

Mathematics:

  • Must have basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills for compiling reports.
  • Must have basic accounting skills to ensure a fiscally sound program.

 

Remembering:          

  • Must remember participants’ names and abilities, follow-up with participants, parents, staff, and recall how to respond to emergency situations.
  • Must remember policies and procedures and apply them accordingly.
  • Must meet deadlines.

 

Language Ability:     

  • Must be able to read accurately.
  • Must be able to compose accurately and grammatically correct documents, letters, signs and memos.
  • Must be able to demonstrate logic and verbally communicate.

 

Reasoning:               

  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgment and assessment of skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound decision making skills and be reactive to the needs of the participants in providing intervention to injury.

 

Work Environment

  • The work environment varies by location of event, class or outing. Times of events, classes or outings vary as well. Programs can run during the day, evenings, weekends, and overnight.
