Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse II.  This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility.  The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.  We encourage all qualified candidates to apply!

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.
  • Monitors and reviews the various functions carried out by the lower-level nurses.
  • Reviews record keeping functions.
  • Serves as lead worker to lower-level nurses.
  • Maintains adequate supply and security of medical equipment.
  • Reviews medical records and completes health summary forms for individual in custody transfers.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires (A) graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience, OR (B) a bachelor's degree in nursing and two (2) years of professional experience, OR (C) a master's degree in nursing. 
  • Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of nursing experience in a correctional setting.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working in the mental health.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience problem solving in a nursing position.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working on an interdisciplinary team. 
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of working experience in a leadership role.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
