General Summary:

The Registered Nurse for the Surgical Center is a professional care giver who assumes encounter-based responsibility and accountability for surgical patients and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment / instrumentation, and other health care team members. The RN assigns and directs the work of related staff.

Requirements:

  • Michigan Registered Professional Nurse licensure required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider—required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider and Pediatric Advanced life Support (PALS) provider required within 1 year of hire for Preop, PACU and Operating Room RNs.
  • Competence in basic cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation required, will train.
  • Previous ambulatory surgical experience preferred.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. NURSING PROCESS
    • Assess the patient's condition and physical, psychological, cognitive, social, rehabilitative, and discharge needs.
    • Develop nursing diagnosis utilized nursing judgment regarding health conditions and needs based on the nurse care plan.
    • Develop a plan of care using nursing diagnoses and setting patient outcome goals. Establish priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies.
    • Implement nursing plan of care and physician's orders. Use delegation skills and therapeutic use of self to coordinate and organize patient care delivery.
    • Evaluate the patient’s response to nursing interventions and physician ordered therapy / diagnostics. Update or modify plan of care to meet the current needs of the patient.
  2. PATIENT EXPERIENCE
    • Educate the patient and significant others based on the cognitive needs of each and defined by patient outcome goals.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for patient and significant others’ rights, including confidentiality.
    • Follow established standards in provision for safety.
  3. PROFESSIONALISM
    • Assume responsibility for own practice including appearance, attendance, punctuality and flexibility in scheduling.
    • Maintain a current knowledge base and use standards of care in professional practice.
    • Practice effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.
    • Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established standards, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events.

    • Set priorities in work using effective time management and support personnel to complete assigned work.
    • Performs the duties of scheduling coordinator when assigned.
    • Perform nursing procedures, assist physicians, and use equipment following established standards.
    • Delegate patient care needs to appropriate staff.
    • Directs and reviews the work of support staff to assure nursing care plan is fully implemented and patient needs are addressed.
  6. COMMUNICATION
    • Use written and oral communication through designated channels to attain desired patient outcomes as well as department and hospital goals.
    • Document concise, accurate and timely information in the patient care record.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.

NURSING PROCESS: ASSESSMENT and DIAGNOSIS -- Collects and documents comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or the situation. Assessments are thorough, timely and accurate and include but are not limited to the physiological, socio-cultural, safety and spiritual needs of patients (including significant other). Demonstrates ability to use critical thinking skills to analyze assessment data to determine the pertinent diagnosis or issues. Responds appropriately to changing needs of patients, including response to emergency/life threatening situations. OUTCOMES IDENTIFICATION / PLANNING -- Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation. Develops and documents an individualized plan of care which incorporates the patient's significant other as appropriate and that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. Identifies initial and ongoing discharge planning needs. Demonstrates the ability to identify, evaluate and document the patient's response to care given. Coordinates care across the continuum to meet the identified and anticipated needs of the patient and his/her support network. IMPLEMENTATION -- Functions as advocate for patient/significant other. Demonstrates skills needed to implement the identified plan of care, incorporating elements of Standards of Professional Performance (as described in Essential Functions #1) as appropriate. Demonstrates ability to prioritize and adjust priorities based on patient/unit needs. EVALUATION -- Demonstrates ability to evaluate and document patient's progress towards attainment of desired outcomes. PATIENT EDUCATION: Demonstrates ability to optimize patient learning through evaluating a patient's learning abilities and carrying out the education of the patient. Requirements: -Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required. -Bachelor's of Science Nursing (BSN) preferred -Current Michigan RN License (or completed by end of orientation) required -Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider (or completed within 60 days of hire) required -For ICU/TU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Emergency, PACU, Surgery Center, Endoscopy, Spine/Orthopedics, Float Pool: ACLS Certification or completed within one year of hire. -For Emergency, 5 West, PACU, Surgery Center: PALS certification or completed within one year of hire. -For Birth Center: NRP Certification or completed within one year of hire. -Certification in specialty area (CCRN, CRN, CNOR, CEN, etc) preferred -Recent hospital experience and/or previous nursing practice experience preferred -2 years prior RN experience in desired specialty area preferred -Prior experience with electronic patient documentation system preferred -Prior experience with technology common to specialty area (i.e., cardiac monitors, IV pumps) preferred -Bilingual preferred Holland Hospital is an Equal Opportunity Employer, please see our EEO policy
