Position Summary:
Functions as a highly skilled member of a collaborative interdisciplinary team providing comprehensive care to patients and families with complex healthcare needs that may be both predictable and unpredictable. Aims to provide care that is safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient and equitable, while mixing and administering chemotherapy to patients that have been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. Has advanced clinical expertise and leadership capabilities in oncology nursing and responsible for managing complex patient care with minimal oversight. Leads efforts to ensure best practices are followed across the team, mentors and trains less experienced nurses, and actively contributes to the development of clinical policies and protocols. This role involves advanced patient care coordination, including the creation of individualized treatment plans, managing high-acuity cases, and leading quality improvement initiatives. Nurses in this position are key clinical leaders who contribute to the overall direction of the oncology team and play a critical role in patient education, safety, and organizational growth.
Position Key Accountabilities:
- Follows strict guidelines as provided by the package insert for mixing, storing, and administering chemotherapy drugs and other cancer treatments under the direction of the supervising provider, uses protective equipment and follows hazardous material disposal regulations.
- Assesses patients' health before, during and after chemotherapy treatments. Monitors for side effects, complications, and signs of infection. Documents patient responses to treatments. Performs on site and telephone triage using best practice guidelines and documentation to ensure patients receive the appropriate level of care in the right setting at the right time by the right caregiver using the approved equipment and supplies.
- Works closely with the supervising physicians and other healthcare professionals to create and implement treatment plans. Communicates any changes in patient conditions to the medical team. Assists in coordinating supportive care services like nutritional counseling, social services and palliative care.
- Educates patients and their families about chemotherapy, side effects, and self-care at home. Provides emotional support and counseling to patients coping with cancer. Teaches strategies for managing treatment-related symptoms. Assists clinical and administrative staff in formulating goals and objectives to meet both qualitative and quantitative outcomes.
- Maintains accurate patient records, including treatment plans, progress and side effects. Follows institutional policies, OSHA regulations, and USP 797 & 800 safety standards. Respects and maintains privacy and confidentiality per HIPPA guidelines.
- Operates and maintains IV infusion pumps and other chemotherapy delivery systems. Ensures proper sterilization and safety measures are followed. Maintains the COLA certification within the laboratory that enables the clinic to function by running CBCs prior to treatment where applicable.
- Responsible for compiling daily or monthly quality reports.
- Acts as a patient and healthcare advocate by maintaining a safe environment and promoting quality healthcare services. Adheres to standards of practice for professional nursing. Stays updated on advancements in chemotherapy treatments and oncology nursing best practices. Participates in continuing education, certifications and training programs. Assesses other clinical staff, so that clinical guidelines are met for the overall safety of the patient. Trains new nurses when onboarding.
- Communicates effectively with collaborative team while escalating critical results and issues in an appropriate and timely manner.

- Provides exemplary internal and external customer service.
- Participates in the development of nursing and clinical policies procedures, and competencies. Develops and/or acquires instructional materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to conduct training, continuing education and staff development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
- Deep knowledge of chemotherapy protocols, oncology treatments, side effects, and clinical management of cancer patients.
- Ability to make independent, expert-level clinical decisions with a focus on patient safety and optimal care outcomes.
- Strong leadership capabilities, with proven experience mentoring and training nursing staff.
- Skilled in assessing clinical competencies and guiding less experienced staff in their professional development.
- Ability to analyze complex clinical situations and implement solutions that improve patient care.
- Skilled in developing and implementing clinical policies and procedures that ensure best practices and enhance operational efficiency.
- Ability to effectively communicate with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families to ensure seamless care coordination.
- Strong interpersonal skills to foster a collaborative team environment and promote shared decision-making.
- Actively participates in continuing education, certification programs, and professional development to stay current with advances in oncology care and nursing leadership.
- Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing (BON) required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate by Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) obtained within 6 months of hire date required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) preferred
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) by Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) preferred
Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school required May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.Minimum Experience:
