JOB SUMMARY
Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitor PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments. Participates in department staff meetings and performance improvement activities.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
- Current BLS certification.
- Graduate of accredited Surgical Tech program.
Minimum Work Experience
- At least two years of experience in a hospital or medically related environment desired.
Licenses
- [Kentucky, United States] Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.
Required Skills
- Must be able to follow directions and to perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.
- Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Interacts professionally with patient and family.
- Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance, as necessary
- Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
- Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients for treatment.
- Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
- Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens on back table.
- Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
- Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating Nurse and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
- Carries out medical/ surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
- Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures
- Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
- Protects patient’s sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
- Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating Nurse or Nurse Manager.
- Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
- Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set up.
- Anticipates needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
- Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies, when necessary and organizes effectively for end of day clean up.
- Is fully responsible for care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
- Follows written procedures for steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
- Consults with other staff members, when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedures.
- Follows the Directions of the Women and Newborn Care Manager/Director at all times, handling conflicts in a professional manner.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with co-workers for the patient’s benefit.
- Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the Operating Room
Technician’s scope of practice.
- Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure.
- Professional Requirements:
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes in services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual review and department in services, as scheduled.
- Attends at least _75%_staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Uses PPE at all times in the O.R. and OB setting.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Is aware of policy on HIPPA and assures patients’ rights are protected at all times.
- Assist with setting up and breaking down of instruments during vaginal deliveries.
- Stock labor rooms with appropriate supplies.
- Responsible for setting up and assisting with newborn circumcisions and instrument care following procedure.
- Ability to function as a patient care tech within the department.
