Summary/Objective

The Unlicensed Nursing Assistant provides a variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for assigned patients.  Performs patient care activities within limits of position--does NOT administer any medication or therapy; does NOT assume independent responsibility for any patient.   

Essential Job Duties

  1. Provides designated and specified patient care to assigned patients under the direct supervision, consultation and notification of a licensed nurse in accordance with physicians' orders and in conformance with approved patient care standards based on previously acquired nursing skills.
  2. Records graphics, intake and output, and ADL's in the computer and flow sheet accurately and implement measures to promote a safe environment for patients and others.
  3. Knowledgeable of the usual and stable baseline conditions (both physical and mental) of the specific patient population in which they are employed.
  4. Institute appropriate nursing interventions that might be required to stabilize a patient's condition and/or prevent complications.Reports objective relevant observations to the licensed nurse to assist in care-planning.
  5. Communicates and interacts effectively with patients and their families based on sensitivity to the psychosocial needs of patients.
  6. Utilizes equipment in the provision of patient care services safely and effectively with adaptation of equipment usage to the age and general condition of the patient, as indicated. Assists in the cleaning and sanitation of all equipment and supplies used in the unit and adheres to all guidelines regarding use of cleaning products.

Description Nursing Assistant I needed for the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Unit (CTCCU). The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Unit, in the new state-of-the-art North Carolina Surgical Hospital and part of the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care, is a fast-paced, Beacon Award for Excellence designated, 40-bed unit specializing in the care of critically ill patients with cardiothoracic and vascular disease. Teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are hallmarks for this unit while providing expert “Carolina Care” to the patients and families we serve. Our ONE GREAT TEAM facilitates admissions, treatments, transfers, and discharges of patients 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The Nursing Assistant I is a valuable team member in the CTCCU as they work closely with our nurses to care for our complex patient population. This is a Per Diem/ at-will position requiring the ability to work a minimum of 12 hours every 2 weeks; Shifts are for rotating day & night, 12 hours (7am-7:30pm & 7pm-7:30am), with weekend and holiday rotation.
