MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Position Summary:
As an Emergency Department Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), your primary responsibility is to provide direct patient care in the emergency department setting reporting to the registered nurse and physicians.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with triage and assessment of patient’s gathering data and prioritizing their care based on the severity of their injuries or illnesses. This involves taking vital signs, conducting interviews, and gathering relevant medical information.
- Medication Administration: Administering medications including oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous medications as prescribed by the physician and ensuring accurate documentation of medication administration.
- Wound Care: Providing initial wound care and assisting with procedures such as suturing, wound dressings, and splinting.
- Intravenous (IV) Therapy: Initiating and maintaining intravenous (IV) access for patients requiring fluid and medication administration.
- EKGs and Cardiac Monitoring: Assisting with electrocardiograms (EKGs) and setting up cardiac monitoring for patients experiencing cardiac symptoms.
- Airway Management: Assisting in airway management procedures such as suctioning, oxygen administration, and assisting with intubation if necessary

- Urinary Catheterization: Assisting with urinary catheterization for patients who require bladder drainage
- Assisting with Procedures: Assisting physicians and registered nurses during various emergency procedures such as chest tube insertion, lumbar puncture, or central line placement.
- Point-of-Care Testing: Performing and interpreting point-of-care tests such as blood glucose monitoring, urine analysis, and rapid diagnostic tests.
- Transporting Patients: Assisting with the safe transfer and transportation of patients to other departments or diagnostic areas within the hospital.
- Collaborative Care: Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated patient care
- Patient Education: Providing patient and family education on various health conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Emergency Response: Assisting in emergency situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), trauma care, and managing life-threatening emergencies.
- Documentation: Accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and responses in the electronic medical record system.
- Communication: Effectively communicating with patients, families, and healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes and continuity of care.
- Adherence to Policies and Procedures: Following established policies and procedures to maintain patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. Performing duties in a manner that provides for the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the patient including assisting in completing initial gathering of necessary data in a timely manner; performing ongoing monitoring when warranted by the patient’s condition. Incorporates cultural and ethnic factors into patient care approaches; correctly differentiating between normal and abnormal findings; and incorporates the functional/developmental age into patient care approaches for the obstetrical patient population.
- Using hospital and regulatory standards of care, the LVN demonstrates sound clinical judgment in assisting with evaluation of the nursing aspects of the trans-disciplinary care plan. In conjunction with the patient/family and the registered nurse, the LVN participates in developing an individualized patient care plan and implementing interventions based on findings. The LVN gathers data and reports patient outcomes on an ongoing basis, follows through on established priorities for patient care services as evidenced by modification of the care as directed by the registered nurse in formulating the care plan, if necessary, and demonstrates the ability to accurately document patient care activities in the patients’ medical record. Provides routine preoperative and post-operative nursing care.
- Participating in a case management approach, the LVN coordinates and collaboratively incorporates the aspects of patient care across the continuum by effectively communicating with physicians, staff and other disciplines.
- Safely and competently administers pharmacotherapeutics adhering to medication policies, procedures, practices and standards, and monitors and reports the resultant outcomes based upon the patient’s response to treatment.
- Acts appropriately to ensure patient safety based on the physical environment, equipment and the patient’s behavior.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum one year recent experience in an acute care setting desired, preferably in Emergency Department.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide emotional support to patients and their families.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and high-stress environment, maintaining composure and professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Must be able to work in a union environment.
