Time Type: Full time Department: CC013190 Surgery Summary: Full Time, 11a-9p, (4/10 hour shifts) Mon-Fri, Rotating Day Off (Min Call Required) A Surgical Technologist II under the direction of the surgeon and RN, assists in the preparation, set-up, and completion of the surgical procedure. They maintain strict adherence to the principles of sterile technique and continually monitor the sterile field to ensure its integrity. The Surgical Technologist II provides safe and effective care for the patients in surgery and commonly participates in procedures for patients from newborn to adult with conditions requiring surgical intervention. The Surgical Tech II serves as a resource for other staff, assists with unit problem-solving, and participates in evidence-based practice. Competently prepares the operating room ensuring the availability of appropriate instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for assigned cases in all services. Seeks to improve the process of room preparation and flow. 2. Performs surgical counts with RN prior to the procedure. 3. Consistently ensures that the majority of the sterile field has been set-up prior to the transfer of the patient into the operating room. 4. Consistently anticipates the instrumentation needs for the upcoming and to-follow cases aiding in case turnover time. 5. Uses knowledge of sterile techniques to competently gown and glove surgeons, assistants and self, passing instruments, and draping sterile field and maintaining sterile field throughout the procedure. Seeks to improve sharps safety measures. 6. Maintains sponges, blades, needles, and instruments in an orderly fashion and actively counts at appropriate times and responds promptly to request by the RN or surgeon to count. 7. Communicates with team in regard to changes in surgeon's preferences and to the RN on implants, medications, and surgical specimens. 8. At the close of the procedure, assists the RN with final surgical counts and breaking down of the sterile field ensuring the appropriate disposal of sharps. 9. Cleans, prepares, and transports instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists with instrument reprocessing tasks and inspects instruments for damage or repair needs reportling promptly to the Service Leader and/or the SPD Supervisor. 10. Assists other team members with cleaning and room turnover consistently ensuring the operating room is ready for the following case. Ensures unused supplies and equipment have been returned to storage areas and room supplies restocked. 11. Communicates with operating room when instruments are needed ofr the following cases. 12. Promotes safety and promptly reports any safety concerns to the RN or Team Leader. 13. Actively participates in improvement of patient care and the work environment through varying improvement activities. 14. Performs other duties as assigned.

A Brief Overview Performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity. Assist with surgical cases in all surgical specialties. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing) Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure. Store and stock supplies as needed Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead Assist with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia Participates in assigned on call activities. The Surgical Technologist I is an integral member of the surgical team. The Technologist I works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. He/she functions in a scrub role, providing assistance to the operating surgeon and assistants. He/she also provides assistance in preparations for procedures and the clean-up afterwards. This individual works collaboratively with the entire surgical team. What you will do Functions in “scrub” role during the various surgical procedures and provides assistance in all areas of patient care. Collaborates with RN and physicians in developing a plan of care for each patient. Collaborates with RN in maintaining a safe, organized, clean, and comfortable environment for patients. Scrubs for routine and complex procedures. Consistently demonstrates aseptic practice as defined in AORN Recommended Practices. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, equipment, and supplies by anticipating the surgical needs at the field. Assists physicians and RN with monitoring and ongoing assessments throughout the surgical procedure. Assists with transportation of patients, as needed. Assists physicians and RN with emergency situations. Exhibits proficiency in each of the surgical specialties that he/she works. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to expertly prepare and operate standard equipment (e.g. nitrogen powered drills, balancing of microscopes, basic audio-visual equipment) prior to and during the various specialty procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and skill to expertly prepare, program, and operate specialized equipment (e.g. navigational systems, lasers, cusa) prior to and during various specialty procedures. Obtains and assembles positional devices (fracture tables, Jackson tables, cerebellar headrests). Practices safety precautions throughout the perioperative phase of patient care. Handles all “sharps” in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as Core Techs, environmental services, and CPD staff. Participates in “time-outs” prior to the start of surgical procedures according to hospital policy guidelines. Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN. Handles and dispenses medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes (e.g. epi: 1:1000, local anesthetics, antibiotic irrigation) to surgeon within the sterile field. Handles, prepares, and dispenses hemostatic agents (e.g. thrombin, tisseal, floseal) to the surgeon within the sterile field.
