Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner - Weight Management Clinic

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Function as an Advanced Practice Nurse and change agent incorporating the primary role of nurse practitioner and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher, and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes for the Weight Management Clinic. This growing outpatient practice incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to patient care involving physicians, mid-level providers, dieticians, and certified diabetes educators to treat patients with obesity. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a panel of patients independently as well as work with the multidisciplinary team in a shared care model.

Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in areas of weight management, endocrinology and diabetes.
  • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for patients with weight management, diabetes and endocrine diseases.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
  • Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for weight management, endocrine/diabetes patients, with regard to patient condition and ag and follow universal precautions.
  • Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
  • Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
  • Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
  • Initiate and coordinate referrals to other healthcare team members or agencies.
  • Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise.
  • Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
  • Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations.
  • Incorporate research findings into practice.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
  • Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.
  • Participate in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
  • Assist in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics; constructively manages conflict.
  • Inspire and motivate others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of Univertity resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and driving organizational results.
  • Identify opportunities for and creates development plans that encourage employees to attend to the growth of their personal and professional capacity; engage self and staff in collective reflection of the University’s greater role in society.

Education Requirements

  • A Master’s degree is required. A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred. If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.


Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated experience in the area of clinical practice is required.
  • Experience in the area of weight management is highly desirable.
  • Experience in the area of diabetes is highly desirable.


CLINICAL EXPECTATIONS

  • 8 half-days per week in the Weight Management outpatient clinic in various UI Health Care locations and telehealth. Clinics are likely to be scheduled Monday-Friday in the morning, afternoon, or evening; however, Saturday clinics may be needed if clinic space is not available.
