Description

The Nurse Education Manager is an advanced role involving the management, assessment, planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of clinical and educational activities, including orientation, staff development and competency assessments. 


Responsibilities

Patient Experience

  1. Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience
  2. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Hourly Care Checks and role models expected behaviors.
  3. Ensures the integration of Care Checks into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care.
  4. Validates staff competency in Care Checks and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed.
  5. Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team.
  6. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager/physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate.
  7. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed.
  8. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language and actions.

CLINICAL/TECHNICAL SERVICE

  1. Oversees the development and implementation of the nursing education budget, including capital equipment allocation, and makes recommendations according to MSHS financial goals.
  2. Maintains, reviews and evaluates educational record keeping and reporting systems and modifies as necessary.
  3. Conducts and participates in meetings related to area of assignment.
  4. Conducts and participates in research activities including pilot studies/initiatives related to education, healthcare management, clinical practice and other associated areas.
  5. Demonstrates the knowledge, skills and communication techniques necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

     Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)

1. Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group.

2. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment.

ADMINISTRATION/OPERATIONS

  1. Implements Relationship Centered Care as the Professional Practice Model and Modified Primary Nursing as the Care Delivery Model with support of Hourly Care Checks. 
  2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  3. Observes established MSHS mandatory educational requirements.
  4. Reviews and formulates departmental and program objectives in accordance with corporate policies, strategies and goals.
  5. Participates in the management of external consulting services i.e. schools of nursing, consultations with professional experts.
  6. Acts as a management representative for the MSHS or department on committees as designated.
  7. Participates in the formulation of departmental policies and procedures based on evidence, best practices, and expert opinion.
  8. Acts as resource person for staff as regards Department of Nursing policies and procedures.
  9. Participates in the recruitment and retention of hospital staff.
  10. Evaluates staff competencies and compliance with patient care and unit documentation requirements.
  11. Participates in the ongoing and annual evaluation and performance improvement plans of employees and shares feedback with the Clinical Nurse Managers/Associate Directors/Directors and Senior Directors accordingly.
  12. Evaluates all newly hired/transferred staff and participates in the decision to pass the probationary period.
  13. Acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities. 
  14. Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units.
  15. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed.
  16. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes.
  17. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies. 
  18. Influences patient care decisions, facilitating patient throughput and acting as a resource person for the unit/clinical service area.
  19. Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives.
  20. Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements affecting staff

EDUCATION

  1. Participates in the development of other staff members and shares behaviors in both in a written and verbal format to nursing leadership.
  2. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements
  3. Identifies learning strengths and needs of designated staff.
  4. Utilizes learning resources.
  5. Identifies and designs programs that facilitate organizational development.
  6. Evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities at the level of the learner, the department, and the institution.
  7. Develops, coordinates and implements activities to achieve educational objectives.
  8. Conducts reviews and evaluates educational needs assessments.
  9. Selects appropriate instructional strategies for educational programs.
  10. Designs, develops, and organizes training manuals, references, web-based and multi-media instructional aids, and other educational materials.
  11. Coordinates activities for maintaining educational materials.
  12. Acts as a trainer, facilitator, consultant, and supervisor to orientees.
  13. Supervises and coordinates the development and updating of orientation plans for assigned areas.
  14. Oversees centralized and unit based orientation for all nursing hires/transfers and tracks completion according to site specific goals and metrics.
  15. Insures weekly evaluations are completed in a timely manner to provide nurse managers/directors with feedback about progress or lack thereof of the newly hired/transferred employee.
  16. Communicates any outliers of time spent in unit orientation to relevant clinical nursing leadership, including the CNO. Provides justification for any extension with deadlines and goal specifications supported by a Performance Improvement Plan. 
  17. Conducts orientation, in-service, competency and cardiac life support programs.
  18. Participates in the Nurse Residency Program with new graduates and and relevanct New Graduate Fellowship Program as applies to the assigned specialty practice.
  19. Introduces new hires to the structure and process of the Daily Management Process.
  20. Organizes the environment of care to support clinical colleagues, patients and their families and members of the healthcare team.
  21. Incorporates ethical principles into decision making for patient and family in collaboration with the clinical nursing staff and the healthcare team.
  22. Acquires and disseminates knowledge and skills relative to the role, patient population, clinical specialty and global or local health community needs.
  23. Serves as a professional role model and preceptor for new leadership staff  and students.

QUALITY AND SAFETY

  1. Designs, supports and leads a safe, therapeutic and efficient patient-centered care environment for professional practice.
  2. Fosters a fair and open culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting.
  3. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability.
  4. Communicates with staff and leadership on compliance with quality and safety metrics.
  5. Participates in the Daily Management Board processes as it relates to new processes/practices and escalation of quality/safety concerns
  6. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures including regulatory survey preparedness and implementation of Safety Solutions/Corrective Action Plans (CAP).
  7. Participates in MSHS and departmental performance improvement activities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing required
  • Masters degree in Nursing/ related Healthcare field with experience in Nursing Education and/or Nursing Leadership. Masters in Nursing Education preferred. Candidates enrolled in a graduate program will be considered with close graduation dates committed. 
  • Three to five years of ED Nursing experience. 
  • Professional Board certification in clinical specialty or staff development recommended.
  • Demonstrated competence and progressive experience in Education and Management/ Administration and clinical specialty assigned
    Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State
  • BSL, ACLS, and PALS from AHA
