Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day.    

A caregiver in this position works varying days and hours between 7:00AM – 11:30PM. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.  

  • Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. 

  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. 

  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.  

  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”  

  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and give specimens to circulator for disposition.  

  • Answer patient phone calls, gather information and relay to the provider. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Certified Surgical Technologist 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
