Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall strategic and operational management of the Nursing Division to include Med/Surg, Telemetry, ICU, and Emergency Department, as well as other nursing support services which include and not limited to: Hemodialysis and Nursing Office department.

In this role, the Director leads and manages nursing and nursing support services in the planning, implementation and evaluation of quality, safe and efficient nursing care services; develops, facilitates and supports implementation of nursing and interdisciplinary care standards throughout the service(s); fosters and demonstrates collaborative relationships with other disciplines; develops and sustains collaborative practice with physician specialty groups and other practitioners pertinent to the service line team; manages the nursing service's financial planning, implementation and monitoring of operational and capital budgets; coordinates service-specific quality and improvement projects

Essential Functions

  • Hires, develops and evaluates nursing leadership from orientation through termination, if necessary, according to established standards.
  • Directs all personnel in these areas to ensure appropriate levels of staff training, recruiting, corrective action, staff development
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with nursing staff, leadership, medical staff, and other administrative staff and throughout the medical center.
  • Coordinates and facilitates activities to promote service and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Works collaboratively, demonstrating partnerships with physician leadership and service line administrative staff to develop and maintain clinical practice standards of care and operational programs.
  • Participates in hospital committees and projects and hospital-wide implementation programs.
  • Ensures all departments have the supplies and tools needed. Develops capital budget submissions within the clinical service and participates in the Departments-wide capital budget submissions.
  • Participates in the design of new clinical facilities and renovations of existing facilities to represent a patient care and nursing perspective.
  • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing leadership programs.
  • Participates in and/or leads interdisciplinary quality and performance improvement projects pertinent to service line goals and objectives.
  • Designs, implements and evaluates programs and activities to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies as pertains to nursing and /or patient care services.
  • Understands and articulates patient care standards reflected in federal and state regulation, The Joint Commission, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel and Power Point. Ability to build strong, effective relationships internally throughout the organizations locations and externally as needed to support the company’s business activities. Strong initiative, leadership, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills. Highest integrity and excellent judgment. Strong planning, organizational, and change management skills.

Minimum Education/Certification

  • Master’s degree preferred or a minimum of 5 years of direct leadership in a similar setting
  • Current NJ State RN License
  • Valid BLS and ACLS certification
  • PALS certification recommended but not required

Minimum Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years as a Registered Nurse in Critical Care and/or Emergency Department
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare
  • Must have a proven background of success in program development, physician engagement and business growth
  • Must have experience managing multiple departments.
  • Knowledge of managed care, DOH, DMHAS, CMS, Joint Commission and Medicaid standards and regulation

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a hospital environment. Work is subject to performance under exposure to individuals with diseases, including communicable diseases, noise, fumes, and potentially dangerous situations, while supervising work.
  • May be required to sit for long periods of time, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, reach or climb.
  • May be required to stand or walk, for a good portion of the workday.
  • May be required to exert significant force to push, pull or lift objects or move patients.
  • Interacts with family, visitors, health team members and other hospital and referral agencies.
