General Statement of Duties

Performs pre-employment physicals, medical evaluations and injury assessments as well as other related duties for the Employee Health Services Clinic in the Department of Human Resources; does related work as required.

Essential Duties

Henrico County Human Resources is seeking a dedicated and skilled Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical services in our employee health clinic. This role involves performing physical exams, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, prescribing medications, utilizing specialized medical equipment, and delivering health education to County employees. The ideal candidate will have strong decision-making skills, the ability to operate in a fast-paced clinic setting, and proficiency in maintaining electronic medical records.
  • Perform physical exams, injury assessments, diagnose conditions, and prescribe appropriate treatment per protocol
  • Utilize specialized onsite medical equipment such as EKG, audiometers, vision screeners, and spirometers.
  • Provide basic life support in medical emergencies and assist individuals in distress until transfer to appropriate level of care.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other health care professionals and community resources.
  • Obtain and review medical and occupational history and other pertinent information to determine individual health qualifications for required work status.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records and utilize office/computer equipment effectively.
  • Communicate effectively with employees and staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Develop and deliver health-related training to County employees as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited nurse practitioner program acceptable to the Virginia Joint Board of Nursing and Medicine, which grants licensure for nurse practitioners; or a Master's degree from an accredited nursing program with a post-graduate nurse practitioner certificate; plus one (1) year of related experience, preferable in an Occupational Health Primary Healthcare or acute care setting; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Information

The expected hiring range for this role will be $100,053-$126,486 and commensurate with experience.
This is a full-time position and will require 40 hours a week. Clinic hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30p.m., Monday- Friday.
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
Must possess and maintain a current license as a Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive authority issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must maintain all required certifications and credentials. Active CPR certification is required.
Experience in occupational health setting preferred but equivalent experience will be considered.

Administers medication and implements specialized health care protocols (e.g. oxygen or ventilator therapies, tracheotomy suctioning, ostomy care, urethral catheterization, intravenous feeding, gastric tube feeding, SVN treatments, blood sugar monitoring, etc.) as ordered by a physician. Develops and maintains detailed care plans for students needing complex health care procedures. Notifies, advises, and updates parents regarding health care issues and medical problems involving individual and/or all students. Coordinates service for medically fragile students, both within and without the school and district; facilitates relationships and maintains ongoing communication with appropriate physicians, health service agencies, and social service agencies. Consults with principal on matters related to emergency situations, suspected child abuse, contagious diseases, or other medically sensitive situations. Acts as a team member in management team meetings by portraying an accurate picture of health and safety issues, providing student health information which may directly affect student performance, and recommending intervention with academic, social or psychological needs. As appropriate, attends IEP team meetings and is actively involved in managing complex health care plans for IEP students. Provides and presents training to students and staff on health issues such as asthma management, diabetic care, hygiene and dental care. Assesses audience age level and determines topics appropriate for group. Trains others to assist with feeding and hygiene procedures for medically fragile students, and educates staff about the care of technological devices.
