Overview

A Nurse Practitioner, certified under section 6910 of the New York State Education Law is a licensed registered nurse who provides primary health care in accordance with written policies approved by nursing/medical administration. Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice and advocates for patients and supports patient rights. In the area of clinical expertise of the geriatric patient, he/she assumes clinical, educational research and performance improvement responsibilities for implementing the nursing process within the framework and philosophy of the department of Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • * Keeps knowledge current by self-directed learning and attendance at educational programs.
  • * Assesses the health status of clients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examinations.
  • * Initiates therapeutic treatments and laboratory examinations. Interprets findings and alters plan of care including, but not limited to, prescribing and altering medication regimens and ordering blood according to designated protocols.
  • * Provides direct care to selected patients for the purpose of transmitting clinical expertise.
  • * Documents findings and plan of care in patient’s medical record
  • * Consults with physician and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health care team to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • * Acts as a consultant for the geriatric patients and collaborates with RN’s in assessing patient’s integumentary status establishing the size, stage of pressure ulcers and orders and/or recommends the appropriate treatment - i.e., dressing, specialty bed.
  • * Collaborates with Staff Development to develop and implement educational programs, new policies and procedures or standards to meet the needs of the geriatric patient o patient at risk for skin breakdown and/or pressure ulcers (Integumentary system).
  • * Plans, develops and initiates appropriate teaching programs for the patient/family in collaboration with other members of the health care team in the areas of health promotion, maintenance and disease prevention.
  • * Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
  • * Initiates and/or participates in approved medical and nursing research studies.
  • * Contributes to the maintenance of a positive image of professional nursing in the medical center and in the local community by implementing programs that recognize nursing as a profession of worth.
  • * Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary committees which influence and/or determine policies affecting nursing practice.

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education

Masters degree designed to prepare a registered nurse to provide primary health care services or the successful completion of an approved supplemental clinical program.

Current NYS licensure as RN;

New York State license with current registration as a Nurse Practitioner;

Current Certification As a Nurse Practitioner As Follows

  • is a graduate of a NYS registered Nurse Practitioner Program OR equivalent OR is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.
  • Has completed a pharmacy component of not less than three semester hours or the equivalent AND has been instructed in NYS and federal laws relating to prescriptions and record keeping (3-hour course).
  • Enterostermal Certification preferred.

  • Completion of an accredited Acute Nurse Practitioner program with current NYS Licensure and registration.
  • 3-5 years of RN Critical or Telemetry Care experience required.
  • BCLS certification and ACLS certification are required.
  • Valid DEA license number.
  • Excellent clinical experience
  • AANP or ANCC certification.

Pay Range

Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse. Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric). Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement. Current National Certification (Highly Recommended) Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
