The Parent's Education Registered Nurse is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. Leading group educational classes for expectant parents will be part of the role. These functions are performed in accordance with the hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. The Parent's Education Registered Nurse is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. What You Will Do
- Plans, teaches and evaluates classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers
- Creates a milieu that promotes learning for staff and patients
- Conducts bedside lactation rounds daily
- Consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems
- Participates appropriately in communication and decision-making activities of the Lactation team and the maternity services
- Selects appropriate breastfeeding related supplies for retail sale and for rental
- Plans, teaches and conducts in-service education for maternity nursing staff
- Plans, organizes and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, both in-patient and outpatient
- Plans, organizes and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, in the Parent Education classes
- Conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program
- Willing to work a flexible schedule as needed
- Serves as an advocate for patient safety and education upon discharge to home after delivery of an infant
- Coordinates discharge needs and planning for every patient on postpartum inclusive of, but not limited to, all discharge teaching regarding care of the mother and infant, coordination of follow up appointments, and communication with physicians regarding anticipated discharge needs of both the mother and infant
- Will create a discharge list daily for the following day and ensure that all necessary testing is scheduled and completed, as to avoid delay in discharge the following day
- Will discuss the discharge process with each family the day prior to anticipated discharge and coordinate scheduled time frame for education and discharge home
- Will review all IEM cards prior to submission to the laboratory for processing at the state level
- Will complete and document all required IEM follow up
- Will review hearing screening results and ensure any and all follow up required with both parents and the primary pediatrician
- Will remove cord clamp and infant security tag immediately prior to discharge from the unit
- Will complete discharge follow up phone call on each patient and report findings to Nurse Manager of LDRP
- Will participate in the Parent’s Education program by teaching assigned courses and providing hospital tours to expectant families
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. required and
- Bachelor's Degree BSN required and
- Master's Degree MSN preferred
- Previous experience with maternal-child health nursing. required and
- 4-6 years 3-5 years of experience in lactation consulting required
- Demonstrates ability to lead, organize, manage, and develop lactation programs.
- Ability to successfully assist mothers with breastfeeding skills.
- Ability to work with several different patient care units and levels of care providers.
- Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in accepting work assignments.
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Must be licensed to practice nursing in the state of New Jersey. upon hire required and
- IBCLC - International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Currently certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred and
- BCLS - Basic Life Support upon hire required and
- NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation upon hire required
