About the unit

This is Neuro Surgery focused Medical Surgical floor that was established in 3/2018. Our patients include the post-operative surgical patients related to Spine and Ortho Spine, C- Spine, Lumbar and Thoracic Spine surgeries, as well as patients staying for Extended recovery after general out-patient surgical procedures. The Medical patient population includes, Mental Status changes, Seizures, GI bleed, Pneumonia. Stroke, Polydrug Abuse, ETOH Abuse on CIWA pathways, Psychiatric patients, Palliative Care, hospice, Multiple Sclerosis, Isolation patients and patients with other infections and Complex family issues. The unit has 8 telemetry beds to monitor patients with suspected cardiac involvement.

Scope of work

The RN, under the ANA scope of practice utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge. The RN provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures and recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes. The RN partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care and develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in health record.

Qualifications

Associates in Nursing Required
Bachelors in Nursing Required within 5 years
Graduates from a non-accredited school of nursing must have at least one year of acute care experience or at least two years of experience in a licensed health care role and must have successfully passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required
AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required upon hire
Specialty Certification highly recommended within 2 years

Determines medical necessity for other services. Regularly re-evaluates the patient’s nursing needs. Evaluates the patient’s ADL and iADL abilities and need for home health aide. Develops and implements the HHA plan of care when HHA services are ordered. Revises and signs this care plan the beginning of each certification period. Supervises HHA in accordance with state/federal requirements and documents the supervision. Orders “other” professional services that may be appropriate to the needs. Reviews billing processes with patient and/or family advising patient and/or family when co-pay or Medicare is not likely to pay for services. Effectively communicates ongoing with patient and family progression/changes in POC. Effectively communicates with Supervisor/Nursing Director/other disciplines in the case. Communication with the patient’s MD (verbally and/or in writing) to obtain effective treatment modalities and/or rehabilitative therapy modalities. Actively communicates in the case conferencing sessions to establish best practices. Submits requests for re-authorization of “more visits needed” to payers timely. Coordinates Community Services for the patient to assist in safe home care needs. Participates in the Performance Improvement Committee process. Performs timely clinical record reviews (CRR) per Agency policy in collaboration with the Nursing Supervisor. Participates in ongoing staff meetings/in-services. Participates in the growth of office by being a willing preceptor for same discipline employees. Participates in the planning, operation and evaluation of the nursing services of the organization. Maintains professional licensure per state requirements.
