The University of Miami/UHealth Department OBGYN has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Nurse Navigator 1 to work in Miami, FL.The Nurse Navigator 1 (H) is the initial point of contact for a patient entering the health system and assures timely scheduling of the first appointment, and coordination of care after completion of the first appointment and supports the patient throughout the care continuum. The Nurse Navigator 1 (H) serves as a liaison between patients, families, caregivers, and the multidisciplinary care team. The incumbent demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care, implements creative and innovative ways to meet the diverse needs of the patients and ensures best practices.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

  • Triages new patient appointments to the appropriate provider(s) and assures timely scheduling of initial appointments.
  • Reviews outside medical records for appropriate scheduling.
  • Assess barriers to care and refers to support services, local, and national organizations when needed.
  • Educates on the treatment plan for patients based on diagnosis.
  • Supports patients throughout the care continuum.
  • Counsels individuals and patients on positive health practices.
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of experts to outline the best treatment for patients.
  • Performs holistic evaluation of specialty population, making use of enhanced proven techniques and procedures to achieve better results.
  • Implements the improvement of patient care, and healthcare policies and resources.
  • Mentors other healthcare professionals by functioning as a preceptor or coordinating preceptors for visiting professionals, students, new graduates, and orienteers.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions

An onco-fertility nurse navigator is a specialized patient advocate who serves as the central point of contact for patients and providers navigating the complex intersection of cancer care and reproductive health. This role is a critical component of a successful pediatric onco-fertility program, ensuring no patient's long-term reproductive health is overlooked during a time-sensitive cancer diagnosis all the way up to survivorship. The navigator's role is multifaceted and extends across the entire patient journey

  • Collaborate with outreach specialist with education and community awareness, as well as improving referral workflow from Holtz, Niklaus, and Alex’s Place.
  • Proactively contact patients immediately upon cancer diagnosis before they are officially referred or scheduled in our clinic. Provide an overview of the consultation, reasons for referral, and available financial resources.
  • Filter patients who are uninterested or unable to proceed, and, most critically, identify and triage urgent cases that are at risk of not receiving timely fertility preservation prior to starting chemotherapy.
  • Coordinate follow-up care after the initial consultation, primarily addressing the needs identified within our clinic.
  • Ensure seamless transition through fertility treatment and preservation protocols.
  • Provide post-treatment support and resources related to long-term reproductive health and survivorship care.
  • Facilitate adherence to survivorship guidelines for reproductive health.
  • Actively manage the referral work queue, monitoring it multiple times a day to ensure consultations are scheduled within our 72-hour window, for oncology-related referrals for female cancer patients up to 25 years old.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for oncology providers, streamlining communication and coordinating urgent cases to prevent any delays in care
  • Share educational materials directly with patients, along with other relevant resources such as the AYA Program, financial aid foundations, and additional educational content when applicable.
  • Actively attend and present at educational events for healthcare providers and for patients and families.
  • Provide an initial overview of available financial aid programs and resources. The navigator will host virtual "Financial Aid Office Hours" for patients to ask questions and receive one-on-one assistance with applications.
  • Serve as a consistent point of contact, ensuring patients are on track with their appointments and diagnostic testing.
  • Record the reasons why a patient may choose not to pursue fertility preservation.
  • Distribute and conduct surveys for patient satisfaction to all patients, whether or not they completed treatment.
  • Retrieve clinical related messages and return calls within 24 hours.
  • Manage and resolve UChart messages.
  • Pend lab order requests.
  • Process authorizations for medications and procedures.
  • Interprets and responds to laboratory test results of patients as required.
  • Uses clinical protocols to refer patients to the appropriate specialist for subsequent diagnosis or treatment.
  • Serves as the liaison between patient and provider.
  • Takes care of all patient requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                        

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Valid State of Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e., Microsoft Office).
