Overview

Provides technical support and assistance to nurses and physicians in the care and delivery of pregnant women. Ensures supplies and equipment are readily available, safe and clean, and ensures patient environment is maintained.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(*Essential Functions)

Conducts hourly rounds on patients and obtains vital signs as needed. Sets up and prepares operating rooms and delivery rooms, in accordance with instructions, and physician preference. Ensures rooms are cleaned and turned over timely. Prepares instruments and equipment for central sterilization department, and safely removes sharps. Performs scrub duties for obstetrical procedures, to include Cesarean section, hysterectomy, D&C and removal of placenta. Performs instrument and sponge count at beginning and conclusion of procedure. Restocks supplies in OB operating rooms, OB recovery rooms, labor and delivery rooms, patient rooms and nurseries. Organizes equipment and ensures equipment is returned to original state, ready for the next case. Maintains individual physician preference file. Takes inventory of instruments, sutures and patient care supplies. Checks supplies for expiration date and rotates stock. Prepares equipment and supply orders for manager's signature. Assists with completion of birth certificate worksheet, in identified sections, and with transmittal of worksheets to the State. Performs other duties as needed and/or assigned.

Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS(Minimum Requirements)KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic Labor and Delivery process, surgical instruments and their proper use.
  • Meets eligibility requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in the state of practice, if needed.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations professionally.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the team and physicians.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of Universal Precautions in handling blood and body fluids.
  • Working knowledge of proper equipment use, delivery beds, C-section table and fetal monitor.
  • Working knowledge of safe handling of sharps, cleaning supplies, and other chemicals.

EDUCATION

  • Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology Required
  • Certificate Surgery Technician Preferred

Associate's degree in surgical technology is required, from an accredited educational institution. Surgical Technologist certification within one year of hire required.
