Summary

Functions as the Surgical Technologist, may harvest the conduit(s) used for grafting in Cardiac Surgery and first assist the surgeon in performing surgery.Minimum two years experience as surgical technologist first assistant. Certification from an approved First Assistant Credentialing Program and endorsed by the Liaison of Surgical Technologists. Work with complex monitoring and life support equipment. Able to perform in cardiac service. Reads, writes, and speaks English. Practice knowledge of standard precautions and sterile technique. Is knowledgeable of age specific physiological/psychosocial/developmental/spiritual needs of patients served. Self directed to learn and achieve unit objectives.Must tolerate long hours and be able to work variable shifts. Much standing, walking, bending, lifting, transferring of anesthetized patients, and pushing of heavy carts, stretchers, and equipment. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination. Visual and auditory acuity required. Position involves skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenterat contact with blood or other potentially infections material.

The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Knows and follows aseptic technique when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department. Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, facility policies and procedures, nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations. Functions as a surgical scrub technician in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team. Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures. Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients. Handles specimens in accordance with facility policy and procedures. Participates in the final “Time Out” process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, the correct procedure, the correct site and if applicable, the correct side. Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for storage or processing. Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse. Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors. Assists with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.
